Microsoft’s Business Plan Collaborative Challenge 2012 is now underway. But this isn’t a competition open to any college student. No you have to be attending one of only ten colleges whose students are allowed to participate. Those colleges are: Berkeley, Columbia, MIT, Harvard, Northwestern, Stanford, the University of Illinois, the University of Michigan, the University of Pennsylvania, or the University of Washington.

Microsoft has ported Windows Phone 7’s tiles to Xbox LIVE as well as a host of new interactive features. The latest software upgrade allows you to use voice commands to find your favorite shows, pause them while you take a break and even save them to be shown using a different console.

Researchers at Microsoft and Carnegie Mellon have developed a wearable technology that will turn just about any surface into a touch screen. That means that you can use any body part, home surface, car surface or consenting friend as a touch screen. Not bad. Except for looking dorky, it’s a great idea. Anything or anyone can become the equivalent of an iPad.

While much has been made of Windows 8′s Metro-style tiles interface, there is another aspect to the new OS that has not been mentioned. Windows 8 and Windows Server 8 will be “optimized for new hardware form factors and cloud services.”

The recent outage Microsoft suffered with its Hotmail and Office 365 suite has raised some concerns across the industry. The concern stems from the fact that many have been pushing the Cloud as a way to avoid such outages.

Office 365, Microsoft’s answer to Google Apps, suffered an outage this week that interrupted access to the service. According to reports Microsoft is working to rectify the issue by offering credit to compensate for the outage.

Nonprofits need up to date technology just like other businesses do. Unlike other businesses however, they don’t have a lot of cash lying around for such items. Most nonprofits use donations to provide services and pay for the people to run them. Shelling out hundreds or thousands of dollars for software that makes their programs run more smoothly is not in the budget’s of most nonprofits, at least not these days.

As people begin to close down their Google Health accounts, Microsoft is trolling for their business. The company announced on Monday that moving all of that saved information on your families health to Microsoft’s HealthVault would be simple. Moving the info is safe and encrypted so you don’t even have to worry about it winding up on some hackers website.

Yesterday, Microsoft announced that its new cloud office suite was now available. According to the company, “It brings together Office, SharePoint, Exchange, and Lync in an always-up-to-date cloud service.” There are different monthly subscription levels depending on the size of your enterprise.

University of Washington’s Baker Laboratory has paired with Microsoft to use Microsoft’s cloud computing service Windows Azure to study proteins. Researchers are using Microsoft’s cloud computing platform to study protein structures and protein folding that could lead to treatments or cures for such illnesses as Alzheimer’s, Malaria, cancer and salmonella poisoning.

All the local, regional and national competitions are over and the winners of those Imagine Cup finals are moving on to the World Finals that will be held in New York, New York from July 8 through 13. There are 124 student teams from 73 countries that will competing for the top prize in several categories.

Microsoft’s cloud computing solution, Azure will get a massive update to support platforms outside Windows Phone 7. According to reports Microsoft will be building toolsets to support the iPhone and Android platform.

Bloomberg BusinessWeek recently sponsored an event with Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft at the 92nd Street Y in New York last evening. Allen indicated that Microsoft will need to “accelerate” its product development to compete with other companies.

Team Note-Taker from Arizona State University won the Software Design category for the 2011 U.S. Imagine Cup while Team BearPaw from Brigham Young won the Imagine Cup People’s Choice Award. Meanwhile Team Bloom from Tribeca Flashpoint Academy won the top prize in the Game Design Windows/Xbox category and the People’s Choice Award for Game Design. Team Big Impact Bear won the competition for Game Design-Mobile.
