Microsoft has a strategic partnership with Nokia that has been simmering all year long. Many speculated that a new handheld device between the two partners would hit the market this past holiday, which did not turn out to be the case. It appears that the two companies have been waiting for CES to unveil its secret weapon.

For a company that has it’s operating system on over 80 percent of the computers in the world, you have to wonder why their phone selection is so pitiful. Really, try to find a Windows Phone 7 device made by more than two companies and you are out of luck in the US. If you try to buy one at Verizon the countries largest carrier, you have one choice.

Microsoft’s market share in the mobile arena has been on the decline this year. With a shrinking piece of the mobile pie, many feared that the platform would lose development support eventually. However, a new study indicates that its quite the opposite.

Earlier today Microsoft unveiled a brand new phone, the Samsung Focus Flash during an event in New York City. Apparently this is all part of Microsoft’s new direction to plunge into the “cheap” smartphone market.

Mango is Microsoft’s code name for the latest update to Windows Phone 7. Handsets are beginning to hit the market. Since Windows Phone 7 handsets must be competitive, they have to have two cameras, one for videocalls. The first Mango handsets will have Tango available as the standard videocalling app, not newly acquired Skype.

Getting other hardware manufacturers to pay royalties for using Google’s platforms has been a recurring theme with Microsoft. The company is literally making millions off Google’s products without lifting a finger.

Recently, news broke of a patent deal with Microsoft and Samsung where the CE giant has agreed to pay the software company an undisclosed amount for each Android phone sold. According to some experts this may be a desperation move on Microsoft’s part.

Currently, Windows phone 7 has approximately 1.6 percent of the smartphone market. You can get smaller than that but no one wants to. As it stands, Windows Phone 7 is well behind Android and iOS in market share, but it looks as if that might be changing.

While much has been made of Windows 8′s Metro-style tiles interface, there is another aspect to the new OS that has not been mentioned. Windows 8 and Windows Server 8 will be “optimized for new hardware form factors and cloud services.”

At the 2011 Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC), Microsoft renewed it’s claim that the Windows Phone operating system (OS) would be the number two cellphone operating system by 2015. Along with that claim Microsoft outlined some of the benefits available to Windows partners.

Yesterday, Microsoft announced that its new cloud office suite was now available. According to the company, “It brings together Office, SharePoint, Exchange, and Lync in an always-up-to-date cloud service.” There are different monthly subscription levels depending on the size of your enterprise.
