While small businesses and large companies have had a hard time shifting to Vista, mid-level companies and organizations have had the hardest time overall due to a number of factors. Beyond simple hardware complications, internally modified software isn’t meshing well with Vista.

Solid State Drives (SSDs) have always underperformed when coupled with Windows Vista. SanDisk’s new file system method now being used on its SSDs aims to change all that.

Microsoft is paying extra close attention to device and driver compatibility with Windows 7. Those that created special versions of drivers for Vista after the switch will have no problem making them work with Windows 7.

The question has been raised several times whether to upgrade to Vista now, or simply wait for Windows 7. It’s becoming increasingly clear that CIOs and leading IT executives are leaning more towards waiting to see what Windows 7 has to offer and completely bypassing Windows Vista all together.

While Vista has seen its fair share of disappointment when it comes to device and driver compatibility, Vista has managed to shine in the area of vulnerabilities and security overall. Microsoft’s latest security report suggests that Vista is now much more safe and secure than XP ever was. Believe it?

A few pre-beta versions of Windows 7 have made their way onto popular BitTorrent sites such as Pirate Bay. The 32-bit version has already seen thousands of downloads, while the 64-bit build is less available and less popular overall.

Yahoo has ceased availability and future upgrades for its Vista-only release of its Messenger IM software. One of the first applications built specifically for and around Windows Vista is gone for good.

Out of the estimated 180 million Vista licenses sold worldwide, over two million alone have come out of India. More surprising, a majority of those licenses are for home edition in the consumer segment over enterprise.

Steve Ballmer made mention of what he calls “Windows Cloud” or a development environment for Internet-based applications that Microsoft may be working on to push the company into the realm of cloud computing. Could this be the beginning of the end for Vista, and hopefully the entrance for a Web-based Windows OS?

Yet again, Microsoft is receiving criticism for its latest marketing push, but not from consumers who don’t understand what they mean like with the Bill Gates, Seinfeld series. It seems the use of the “No Walls” subtext used in the newest commercials violate trademarks set forth by OS-startup “G.ho.st.” Or does it?

Windows Vista is a large operating system, there’s no denying it. With so many services and processes running in the background, even a system with more than sufficient memory can become bogged down quickly. Vista consumes 32MBs of graphics memory alone, while the many included services take up nearly 512MBs on average, leaving little room for performance- especially on slower machines with little memory.
