Microsoft releasing Windows 7 SP1 soon
If you’ve been holding off upgrading to Windows 7 until Service Pack 1 arrives then your wait may finally be coming to an end. That’s right folks, Windows 7 SP1 is on its way, likely within days.
According to Microsoft’s Russian Technet website, the final build of Windows 7 SP1 has already shipped to OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers). This comes roughly three months after the release of the first SP1 release candidate, and two months after the release of the Service Pack Blocker Tool. It’s also been 14 months since Windows 7 was originally launched, and it was 14 months after release that Vista got its first service pack. All of which indicates a release of the final build to end users is imminent.
This is big news for consumers, but even bigger news for companies. Many consumers will not even have spared one thought to the release of Service Pack 1 when they were upgrading to Windows 7. Sure, it’s always a positive step in the right direction when the first service pack arrives for a Windows operating system, but it’s not usually a deal-breaker. Especially when the OS is as strong as Windows 7 was out of the box.
However, for companies which cannot possibly risk upgrading their machines — from dozens to hundreds of thousands — to a new operating system if there is any chance of an inherent problem with it, SP1 represents a major confidence boost. And it’s after the release of Service Pack 1 that many companies decide the time is ripe to upgrade.
I can only assume SP1 will be released this Tuesday (Jan. 18) or next Tuesday (Jan. 25). Any longer than that and I’d begin to wonder what Microsoft was playing at. However, the company isn’t commenting on the speculation for whatever reason. My advice would be to sit and wait patiently rather than download one of the hooky torrents doing the rounds. Because you can never be quite sure what you’re actually getting unless it comes directly from Microsoft.
