Schmidt: Bing is Google’s biggest rival

September 25, 2010

Forget Apple and Facebook. Google’s main competition at the present time is Microsoft’s rival search engine Bing. That is at least according to Google CEO Eric Schmidt, a man who should know.

Microsoft has done amazingly well with Bing. The company’s search efforts have been a little flaky over the years, and have consequently been completely dominated by Google and, to a lesser extent, Yahoo. But not Cuil. No, not even Microsoft’s search engine was ever that lame.

Then along came Bing, and things turned around completely. A memorable name, and a well-designed engine which can truly compete with Google. And actually, more features than Google’s ubiquitous homepage, with new elements being added all the time.

Then came the deal with Yahoo which means all Yahoo searches are being powered by Bing. So the only site left standing between Bing and world domination is Google.

Speaking to The Wall Street Journal recently, Google CEO Eric Schmidt was asked which out of Apple and Facebook is considered the “bigger competitive threat?” His answer, as given at around the 3:30 mark in the video embedded below, was “Neither.” Instead, Google considers Bing to be its true competitor.

This is great news for Microsoft and the Bing team, because it’s recognition that Google is well aware of the competition Bing poses. While Bing can only boast around 11 percent share of the search market at present, compared to Google’s 65 percent, it’s on its way up rather than down.

An interesting point was made on Business Insider, however, concerning the difference between Bing, and Apple and Facebook, in this conversation. Which is that while Apple and Facebook are competition for the future, possible with Twitter thrown in for good measure, Bing is “fighting the war Google won last decade.” So, has Microsoft joined the party too late to actually make any difference?
