Microsoft revives Windows 7 Family Pack

September 2, 2010

Microsoft is bringing back the much-loved but short-lived Windows 7 Family Pack. Unfortunately, once again it’s only going to be available for a limited time.

Windows 7 is already selling extremely well, out-pacing Vista and even managing to eat into XP’s considerable market share. As well as being installed on all new laptops and desktops, Windows 7 is available as an upgrade to people who are looking to move on from XP or Vista. And it’s these people that Microsoft is looking to with its latest move.

Around the time Windows 7 launched on Oct. 22, Microsoft made its Windows 7 Family Pack available to buy. The Family Pack offered three upgrade licenses from XP or Vista to Windows 7 for just $149.99. The only catch was its limited availability which turned out to be while stocks lasted. In the end, stocks ran out within six weeks.

To celebrate Windows 7 reaching its first birthday, Microsoft is reviving the Family Pack. From Oct. 3, the Windows 7 Family Pack will be available to buy both from participating retailers and the online Microsoft store. The price remains the same, as does the offering of three Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade licenses.

Unfortunately, the other aspect of the deal which remains the same is the limited availability, with “while supplies last” being the official wording. I suspect there will be more stock this time around but there will also be more buyers keen to get their hands on the Family Pack; especially those who feel they missed out last time around. In other words, put your order in early to avoid disappointment.

As well as hitting the U.S., the Windows 7 Family Pack is going to be available in Canada, the U.K., Germany, France, Australia, and other markets from Oct. 22. Stock is likely to be in even shorter supply in these countries owing to Microsoft’s obvious American bias.

The Windows 7 Family Pack represents great value for money for anyone seeking to upgrade to Windows 7. And Windows 7 is definitely an operating system worth upgrading to.

Microsoft doesn’t celebrate anything with 7pack. The pack is out because PC sales are down and so are Win7 sales.
