The University of Arizona has chosen Microsoft Business Productivity Online Suite for use by their faculty and staff. The suite is a cloud computing method of connecting faculty and staff and encouraging collaboration. It will also move communications at the University into the 21st century.

Microsoft really, really wants everyone to upgrade up from Internet Explorer 6. However, it isn’t helping that many companies are using the aged Web browser to prevent employees visiting certain sites.

Apple has overtaken Microsoft in terms of market cap, and is now the second highest valued U.S. company behind Exxon. But Steve Ballmer doesn’t care so long as people are still buying PCs with Windows installed on them.

Microsoft is putting pressure on the manufacturers of a Windows 7 upgrade tool to spell out the fact that most users will be breaching licensing rules. But it’s not clear how far Microsoft is prepared to go to prevent such behavior.

Vista was “not executed well,” as we all know. Still, it’s nice to hear Microsoft, via Steve Ballmer, finally admit as much. Especially as it came alongside the Microsoft CEO spelling out his vision for the future direction of the company.

Microsoft has noted that a graphics bug could allow hackers to take limited control of 64-bit Windows 7 machines. It says disabling Aero can block the problem, but that it’s unlikely to be exploited.

Hotmail is evolving, with Microsoft hoping to better compete with the likes of Gmail and Yahoo with a new version of the email client. This looks like being a complete reinvention of the humble inbox rather than a mere upgrade.

Microsoft has agreed to pay $200 million to a company that had patents on technology used in several editions of Windows. The payment follows a previous court order for a $106 million payment which only covered XP and Vista.

Microsoft has confirmed Office Mobile 2010 will be a free upgrade for existing users on Windows Mobile 6.5 devices. A beta edition is already available to install through the Windows Phone Marketplace.
