Internet Explorer 9 is now definitely on its way, with Microsoft having released a preview version of its latest Web browser during Mix 10. The idea being that developers get to test out the forthcoming browser before it gets a full release to the public.

A Harvard academic who works for Microsoft as a social media researcher has attacked privacy failings of both Google and Facebook. Danah Boyd of Microsoft Research New England insisted privacy is still alive, but technology will continue to confuse it.

Yet another security vulnerability was discovered in these older browsers and Microsoft is working hard to fix the vulnerability. An Israeli security researcher discovered the problem and posted exploit code that would allow others to essentially take over computers running IE6 and IE7. As with the recent batch of security vulnerabilities, IE8 is not affected.

Yes, another appeal. But this case still isn’t done and dusted, as Microsoft is still petitioning for an en banc review of the case. If that is unsuccessful then Microsoft could take its appeal to the Supreme Court. Basically, if you don’t succeed the first time, try again, and again and again.

A change to the way hard drives are formatted is likely to make for a noticeable slowdown for Windows XP users. It may mean those in the market for a new drive might be better served upgrading operating systems as well.

The MSN homepage is changing, with the long-gestating redesign finally being moved out of its trial period and rolled out to all users. Microsoft now just has to hope that the majority of those users actually like the redesign.

Windows 7 is a solid and dependable operating system, and one of the best Microsoft has ever released. And yet, like every other Microsoft OS, it needs constant updating and patching. Which leads to an inevitable Service Pack. And it now appears SP1 could be with us before the end of 2010.

There’s more evidence that the “browser ballot” screen rolling out to Windows users in Europe is benefiting rivals to Internet Explorer. But it’s still too early to say there will be a mass migration.

On Tuesday Microsoft will be releasing two bulletins. The bulletins address eight vulnerabilities in both Windows and Office. Bulletin 1 will be fixing problems with Microsoft Windows while Bulletin 2 will address issues with Microsoft Office.

With the European Union’s “browser ballot” screen already rolling out to some users, Internet Explorer’s four main rivals seem happy with the settlement. But the people behind the other seven browsers included in the ballot believe they are the victim of poor design.

Microsoft has sold 90 million copies of Windows 7 to date since its release last October. This makes the latest Windows operating system the fastest selling OS of all time. But there’s more to come. Much more, in fact, as Microsoft expects to sell a total of 300 million copies of Windows 7 in 2010.

Microsoft has officially confirmed that Office 2010 will be available as a free upgrade for some users. The download offer will be available to people buying Office 2007 between now and a few months after the new system’s release.
