Bill Gates joins Twitter, rejoins Facebook
Bill Gates has decided, a little later than most celebrities and famous faces, to join in the fun at Twitter. Although, his tweets seem to be of a serious nature at this point in time as he is addressing the relief efforts in Haiti after the earthquake. The Microsoft chairman has also rejoined Facebook after giving up on the social network last year.
Bill Gates is one of the most recognizable faces in the world of business and technology. He founded Microsoft with Paul Allen and built the company into one of the most successful companies in the world. As a consequence, he’s built a huge personal fortune, and always sits near the top of the most wealthiest people on Earth. As of last year, he’s classed as the richest man in the world, with a $50 billion fortune.
He is now non-executive chairman of Microsoft, having given up his full-time role in 2008 in order to concentrate on the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the charitable organization Gates runs with his wife.
And it’s likely it is this organization and the work it does that has persuaded Gates to join Twitter and rejoin Facebook. He left Facebook after complaining of getting too many friend requests, but he is now back on the site, with TechCrunch reporting that his account now works on a one-sided basis, with others able to make connections with him with no action required from the man himself.
This is, however, Gates’ first foray into the world of Twitter. Despite only sending his first tweet a matter of hours ago, he’s already amassed more than 110,000 followers (at the time of writing). His first tweet read, “”Hello World.” Hard at work on my foundation letter – publishing on 1/25.” He has since followed 40 people and sent messages to Ryan Seacrest and Ashton Kutcher.
