Windows 7 fixes available for printing and Office 97/User Account Control bugs
Microsoft has issued instructions for fixing two bugs in Windows 7 which don’t yet have automated solutions. One issue involves printing detailed images on large-sized paper, while the other involved Office 97 causing problems with User Account Control.
The printing problem arises when there’s a combination of a particularly large sheet of paper being used for printing and a high-resolution print setting such as 600 dots per inch. According to Microsoft:
The problem will occur if “(Paper Width in inches * dpi) * (Paper Length in inches * dpi)” results in a number larger than 4GB (0xFFFFFFFF).
Put in simpler terms, that means there was an oversight in the design of Windows 7 which means that trying to print a particularly large and detailed image may cause Windows to mistakenly use a section of the PC’s memory which doesn’t actually exist. The solution is a fairly simple fix to the registry.
The second problem involves users who’ve installed Office 97 onto a Windows 7 machine. Doing so has been found to change a registry setting which in turn means that attempting to change User Account Control settings doesn’t work as clicking the OK button to confirm the changes doesn’t get any response.
The solution for this problem is even simpler and involves creating a file in Notepad, cutting and pasting text provided by Microsoft, saving the file as UAC.reg, then double-clicking on the file which will then make the necessary changes to put the registry back in its correct state. If for any reason you need to reinstall Office 97, you’ll need to carry out these steps again.
If you aren’t comfortable carrying out these steps, and you don’t need to change UAC settings imminently, it should be OK to leave this for the moment as there’s a good chance Microsoft will fix the problem in a future automatic update.
