How to easily set up a home network in Windows 7

Windows 7 logo Every version of Windows from the beginning to now, has improved on the ease with which a home network can be created.  Windows 7 makes it very easy.

After connecting your new computer to your network, your computer will recognize any other Windows 7 computers also on the network and a screen will pop up and ask Do you want to join a Home Group?  Click Join Now.

Up pops another screen that says A HomeGroup has been created.  This screen will give you the option to share pictures, videos, music, documents and printers.  Click the box next to each item you want to share.  Then click Join Now.  Type in the HomeGroup password.  Your new HomeGroup has been set up and is ready to go.

After the HomeGroup has been established you might decide that certain files and folders are not appropriate to share with the entire family.  To remove files and folders from being shared,  you begin by clicking on Start then you click on Control Panel in the right hand column.  Then click on Network and Internet.  Choose HomeGroup which will take you to the Change HomeGroup Settings page.  Under Share libraries and Printers you can either un check Documents so that no documents are shared or you can click on the How do I exclude Files and Folders option.  

If you choose to exclude only certain files and folders click on the How do I exclude Files and Folders option which will bring up the Keep specific files and folders from being shared with a homegroup screen. Here you are  given an additional three options: 1.)To prevent a library from being shared (while creating or joining  a homegroup, 2.)To prevent a Library from being shared (after creating a homegroup), and 3.0 To prevent specific files or folders from being shared (after creating or joining a homegroup.

Click on the last option.  It guides you through the process with the following steps:

1. Click the Start button Picture of the Start button, and then click your user name.

2. Navigate to the file or folder you want to exclude from sharing, and then select it.

3. Do one of the following:

  • To prevent the file or folder from being shared with anyone, in the toolbar, click Share with, and then click Nobody.

  • To share the file or folder with some people but not others, in the toolbar, click Share with, click Specific people, select each person you want to share with, and then click Add. Click Share when you are finished.

  • To change the level of access to a file or folder, in the toolbar, click Share with, and then select either Homegroup (Read) or Homegroup (Read/Write).

 

Creating a Windows 7 HomeGroup is simple and quick.  You can easily change sharing options giving you a tremendous ability to adapt your HomeGroup to your needs.
