The Zune HD has been completely owned by the Apple iPod over the holiday season, being outsold at every turn. The question now is what Microsoft should do – settle for second best and carry on regardless, or call it a day? If it decides to persevere then what can it do to begin to compete with Apple’s behemoth?

Microsoft’s mobile strategy is in trouble; that is something most industry watchers and consumers agree with. The question is whether it’s too late for Microsoft to get back in the game. Down but not out?

Is nothing sacred to Chinese pirates? Obviously not, because they’ve now created a version of Ubuntu which looks and feels almost identical to Windows XP, the beloved older brother of Windows 7. The question has to be, why?

What a difference an OS makes. Many IT departments of corporations and companies weren’t keen on Vista, and no wonder, as it had both genuine problems and an over-hyped bad reputation. But that’s all changed with Windows 7.

Microsoft has already begun the process of altering Word to comply with a court order. Were it not to do so, it would have been barred from selling Office 2007 from Jan. 11.

Microsoft has now officially lost its case, and the appeal, against Toronto-based company i4i. The lawsuit was brought over the use of XML in Microsoft Word. But Microsoft seems willing to move on from the case, modifying Word to abide by the ruling.

Microsoft has issued instructions for fixing two bugs in Windows 7 which don’t yet have automated solutions. One issue involves printing detailed images on large-sized paper, while the other involved Office 97 causing problems with User Account Control.

When Microsoft announced its new search engine was to called Bing, I’m sure I wasn’t alone in thinking it was a strange choice of name. However, it turns out Microsoft wasn’t the first company to think of using the name Bing. And it’s now being sued by Bing! Information Design.

Microsoft has reported that the number of support requests about Windows 7 made to call centers is around half what it expected. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that Windows 7 is causing less trouble for people installing or upgrading it, but that customers with problems are seeking solutions in other ways.

As widely expected, Microsoft and the European Union have agreed to a settlement in the row over bundling Internet Explorer with Windows. But it’s now emerged that the browser ballot screen will be sent to existing PCs.

Office 2003 contains a feature named Rights Management Service for protecting secure documents from unauthorized access and editing. And in the past few days that feature has proven much more secure than anyone wants.

Windows 7 for desktops and laptops may now have successfully launched, but its mobile counterpart Windows Mobile 7 is still nowhere to be seen. Originally intended to be released sometime in 2008, that changed to 2009. Then it was delayed until early 2010. And now it’s been delayed again, this time until late 2010. The question now is whether it will ever actually show its face?

An extensive series of practical test has shown that Windows 7 does perform better than Vista in some areas. Fortunately those are the areas most likely to make a noticeable difference.
