Windows 7 and burgers – wait, what?
The release of Windows 7 went well, with just a few problems marring an otherwise perfect launch. It succeeded where Vista failed two-and-a-half years ago. But there was one strange addition to the Windows 7 launch that I don’t recall ever being present at the launch of any other operating system, Microsoft or otherwise. That’s right, burgers seemed to be the order of the day for some inexplicable reason.
When Vista launched in January 2007 I don’t recall there being any burger-related promotions. I could be wrong of course, maybe I just wasn’t aware of them at the time, and there is a possibility that everyone was too busy moaning about Microsoft’s new OS to focus on any burger related shenanigans taking place. But I don’t think so.
However, this year, with the release of Windows 7 last Thursday, the burger goodness is everywhere.
Burger King in Japan has commemorated the release of Windows 7 with the Windows 7 Whopper. Here is a burger that differs in no way from a normal Whopper except it has seven patties of beef, making it a real man’s meal. And if any man (or woman) is brave enough to get through one in its entirety then it’s probably a real artery-clogging heart attack meal as well.
We have proof that the Windows 7 Whopper is not only real but that people are buying it, with two gaming bloggers in Tokyo bravely attempting to down one, and videoing their experiences of the attempt.
But they weren’t the only ones to celebrate the release of Windows 7 with a burger meal. As part of their Windows 7 launch party, the guys at SmugMug decided to head for In-N-Out Burger. There they tried and failed to order 7×7s for everyone but instead ordered rounds of 4×4s and 3×3s. They then wolfed the lot, supposedly while extolling the virtues of Microsoft’s new OS, even if they weren’t big meat eaters beforehand.
If this is the start of a trend then what next? If burgers are the meal of choice for Microsoft, are pizzas going to become the meal of choice to commemorate the launching of an Apple product? Dominos does offer snow leopard as a topping now, don’t they?
