Free Windows 7 Ultimate for all who party hardThe release of Windows 7 continues to draw closer, now being just seven weeks away. And Microsoft is gearing up for the launch with a number of initiatives. The latest is an attempt to increase the flow of word of mouth advertising by having people host Windows 7 parties with their friends. The reward for your troubles, and for looking like an absolute geek in front of your nearest and dearest? A signature copy of Windows 7 Ultimate.

Windows 7 has enjoyed a very successful pre-release period so far. The response to Microsoft’s latest operating system has been positive from both industry watchers and the public. Microsoft is obviously hoping this good run will continue up to, during and beyond the release of Windows 7, and it’s desperately building buzz around the launch.

Steve Ballmer is to host the big launch party in New York on Oct. 22 and Microsoft wants us all to take part in the fun. It’s doing this by encouraging us all to have a Windows 7 party. According to TechFlash, Microsoft has teamed up with House Party Inc. to make this happen. And no, this isn’t a joke in any way.

Between Oct. 8 and Oct. 12, Microsoft employees around the world will be expected to host parties where the virtues of Windows 7 can be extolled to their clearly desperate friends. And then members of the public will also get a chance to hold a Windows 7 party, this time during the week following the release of the OS.

Microsoft does understand that most people aren’t going to want to do this without some kind of reward being in place. So everyone chosen to host a Windows 7 party will receive a signature copy of Windows 7 Ultimate as well as a number of other goodies that can be utilized to make every geek’s party go with a bang. These include a Windows 7 puzzle, a deck of playing cards, and some napkins. Wild.

Being an official host of a Windows 7 party is limited to people in the U.S., the U.K., Germany, France, Canada, Australia, Mexico, Hong Kong, Japan, Spain, Italy, and India. There is also very limited places available, and most will be in the U.S. If all that isn’t enough to put you off, and you think you could find 10 friends willing to sit around and discuss Windows 7 for an evening, then you can apply at the House Party site.

    Windows 7 Party invitation

“Dude were gonna have this great party at my house”

    “cool…what should I bring”

    “your computer”

    “what?”

“bring your computer, were gonna have a Windows 7 party …and talk about Windows 7 all night long….”

    (long silence)

    “hello?…”

    “Dude..uh….” (laughter in the background) “no thanks…I …I ..I am busy…yes that’s it…”

People forget it wasn’t that long ago when a Windows OS update would have people lined up at retailers waiting for the doors to open at Midnight. XP was a long time ago.

They haven’t had much competition since and the widely installed 7RC makes it pretty hard to get an event atmosphere.

    Should be a thud.

MS grasping at staws. They wish they could buy the buzz Apple and Google products create. The only way to do this is to innovate, something they are no longer familar with.
