Microsoft finds its Bing Jingle – Bingle bungle?
Every product, good or bad, needs an advertising campaign. And many advertising campaigns are built around a catchy jingle or unforgettable slogan. Has Microsoft found the answer to both these problems with a song by Jonathan Mann, known on YouTube as ‘The Rock Cookie Bottom’? His Jingle is called Bing Goes The Internet and is… interesting.
Microsoft’s new search engine Bing is actually doing rather well, being the company’s best search effort ever and gaining new users every month. The Microsoft/Yahoo search deal won’t harm Bing either, immediately putting it in second place in the search rankings and giving it a better chance of catching Google.
All that’s left to do is create the inevitable advertising campaign. Microsoft sought some assistance in this mission by launching a contest a couple of weeks ago to try and find the best Bing jingle, or Bingle as I like to refer to it. The mission, should anyone choose to accept it, was to create a theme song or jingle in the form of a music video on YouTube.
Microsoft recently announced the winner, chosen from the amount of page views each video gained. The winner of the $500 check is Jonathan Mann, a guy who is attempting to upload one song to YouTube every day. His Microsoft Bingle is called Bing Goes The Internet and it looks like this:-
Wow, I’m blown away. Not by the fact Mann’s Bingle is so fantastically good that it deserves more than $500 but by the fact it won in the first place. It does make me wonder how bad the rest of the entries were. Bing Goes The Internet is cheesy but actually very catchy. If you don’t believe me listen to it another five times as I have and you’ll likely see what I mean.
However, that catchiness doesn’t excuse the accompanying dance that looks like something the Oompa-Loompas sang in Tim Burton’s adaptation of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. Microsoft made no promise to use the winning Bingle in any upcoming advertising campaign but I can actually see this being used in some way, maybe after some heavy modification has been done.
I’ve been a little more charitable about the Bingle than TechCrunch writer MG Siegler was. But as much as Mann must have cringed to read the technology journalist’s opinion on his work, it did give him the inspiration for another of his daily tunes. It’s called I’m MG Siegler and is simple yet brilliantly funny:-
What do you think of Bing Goes The Internet? Is it a jingle and slogan that should be confined to the dustbin as soon as possible or should Microsoft use it in a future Bing advertising campaign? As always, let us know in the comments section.
