Microsoft names Steven Sinofsky President of Windows divisionWith Windows 7 literally just around the corner from being released, Microsoft has named Steven Sinofsky the new President of the Windows division. Sinofsky is acknowledged as the man who has turned around the Windows division and brought Windows 7 to the verge of release, on time, and with good critical reception.

Sinofsky has been with Microsoft for 20 years, joining in 1989 as an engineer and working his way up from there. In 2006 Sinofsky was moved to the Windows division to try and sort out the continuous delays to Vista. His work prior to that, leading Microsoft Office development, established his reputation for being in charge of projects which were delivered on time and in an efficient manner.

TechFlash, which revealed the news of his promotion, also claims Sinofsky “has a reputation for keeping things low-key and under wraps.” This is an obvious advantage for someone leading development teams in any technology company, and maybe even more so for Microsoft due to the very nature of its business.

In a Microsoft press release, Steve Ballmer said:

Steven Sinofsky has demonstrated the ability to lead large teams that deliver great products. The work he and the team have done in getting ready to ship Windows 7 really defines how to develop and ship world-class software. He is a perfect fit to lead the Windows group.

Bill Veghte, who has been another key member of the team turning the disaster of Vista in to the success that is Windows 7, is leaving his role as senior vice president in charge of Windows sales and marketing. He is expected to take some time off after handing over his responsibilities to Tami Reller, the chief financial officer for the Windows division. But “a new leadership role” is promised for Veghte in the future.

With this executive shuffle, Microsoft is showing its commitment to keep the momentum it’s currently building with the pre-release hype surrounding Windows 7 going beyond its release. Come November, Microsoft is likely to start working on Windows 8, and it obviously sees Sinofsky as the right man to oversee this development and eventual release.
