Internet Explorer 8 was released in March 2009 after being worked on for around two years. Although there are some nice new features, and many improvements over IE7, Microsoft’s Web browser is old, outdated and slower than a snail hitching a ride on the back of a dead tortoise. Is there any point in developing Internet Explorer 9, really?

Microsoft has made a number of changes to its Photosynth software, including integration with Virtual Earth, to make the two services act together. In an obvious attempt to compete with Google Street View, Photosynth is now being targeted at tourism groups, retail chains and the public sector.

It’s a well-known fact that Microsoft has always bundled Internet Explorer with its operating systems. Will this practice end with Windows 7? Probably not. In fact, people who have downloaded the Windows 7 Release Candidate this week have reported even worse than that.

A new set of tests confirms that Windows 7 does run faster than Vista across a range of applications. However the improvement is likely too minimal to be noticeable in ordinary use.

Microsoft is renaming its Windows Genuine Advantage anti-piracy system and adding several tweaks for Windows 7. The rebranding appears to be partially an attempt to overcome the negative feedback on some elements of the scheme.

Microsoft is going through what can only be described as a rough patch. It recently announced the first year-on-year revenue decline ever, canceled the company picnic, and made 5,000 people redundant. Now, those layoffs are starting to affect a number of different products.

A security firm is complaining that Microsoft has failed to fix a security flaw dating back to before Windows XP. F-Secure notes that Windows 7 will continue a pattern of allowing hackers to disguise executable files as safer document files.

The Windows 7 RC is now with us, being made available to the general public yesterday. The final version of the new OS hasn’t yet been given an official release date but the period between August and November 2009 is looking more and more likely. So how long does Vista have left before it’s killed off completely?

An estimated 3,000 Microsoft employees have been told they are to lose their jobs. It’s part of the 5,000 job cuts announced earlier this year, and it appears far more cuts will follow.

Windows 7 includes an add-on feature to run a virtual copy of XP to take care of application incompatibilities. But the feature is getting mixed feedback, most notably because it won’t work on all PCs.

The general public will have to wait until May 5 to get their hands on Windows 7 RC1. The press and Web sites are being given early access to it. Being a writer for this site does have some privileges and I was able to download the RC early. Here are some first impressions, but a full review will be coming later.

Microsoft recently called out Apple Macs for what they truly are – overpriced style over substance. Now rumors abound that Apple is looking to drastically cut the price of some of its computers in a bid to appeal to a wider range of people, especially with the economy in the state it currently is. Apple is running scared.

Windows 7 is almost here, with a May 5 release date for the RC and an October release of the final product inadvertently revealed by the boss of laptop manufacturer Acer. With this comes news that Windows 7 will be free for a year and pirated copies will once again be kept nice and secure by Microsoft.
