U.S. Army announce it is upgrading its computers to… Windows Vista
While most of us are currently awaiting the release of Windows 7, the U.S. Army is only now thinking about upgrading to Vista. Oh, and forget Office 2010 for the time being, the U.S. Army is about to upgrade to Office 2007. There’s nothing like being at the cutting edge of technology.
We’re maybe four months away from the time Windows 7 is on shop shelves and available to buy, both pre-installed on new computers and as an option to upgrade. However, with many businesses, organizations, and individuals still yet to make the move from Windows XP to Windows Vista, it may be some time before Windows 7 is universally adopted.
Everything is pointing towards Windows 7 being the best Microsoft operating system since XP. Vista has had its critics from day one and has unfortunately failed to throw off the stigma built up when it launched with a multitude of issues. But 7 is already being treated as the new messiah even before it has truly arrived.
But as much as Windows 7 is being talked about in glowing terms, that doesn’t automatically ensure it will be adopted quickly by the IT departments of businesses and organizations. Many of these are still using XP and will be unsure of foregoing Vista altogether in favor of Windows 7. As it is with the U.S. Army.
According to DailyTech, the United States Army has just announced it will be upgrading all of its remaining computers to Windows Vista by the end of 2009. Currently, most of the 744,000 desktop computers are running XP, with the exception of around 13 percent which have already been upgraded to Vista. The rest will now follow suit.
In addition to this the U.S, Army’s huge bank of PCs will be upgraded to Office 2007. Currently around half run Office 2003 with the remainder having already been upgraded. This is despite Office 2010 not being far from completion.
I would have thought it paramount for the military to have the most up-to-date and state-of-the-art equipment (no, I don’t mean Macs) but obviously not. Judging by this news, the U.S. Army will finally decide to upgrade to Windows 7 in 2012, by which time Windows 8 will be well on its way to being ready.

Clearly the author of this article has absolutley NO idea what it takes to support, maintain and upgrade computers in a large enterprise. Upgrading 750k machines, most of which are deployed in remote locations, isn’t like upgrading your mother’s PC. Learn about what you are writing about … BEFORE you write about it!

The wait for windows 7 will be a much better move on the armys part. I have beta tested both OSes and 7 is much more stable than Vista was. It’s also more user friendly.
