Depending on the source you believe, Windows 7 is going to be released in the next three, the next six, or the next nine months. Whatever the truth it seems as though we’ll finally be able to get our hands on Microsoft’s latest operating system by the start of next year. Which is going to please a lot of people.

Microsoft says applications produced by other firms are now responsible for the majority of security problems on Windows PCs. It’s also suggested publicity about viruses could be fueling a rise in ‘scareware’ scams involving bogus security software.

Windows XP really will never die. Computer firms look set to be allowed to continue selling new machines with XP for a year past the latest deadline and will also be able to offer Windows 7 > Vista downgrades.

Security software is now more essential than ever, with more threats coming at us from all angles from the Internet. Microsoft is working on a new integrated security suite as part of its Forefront software. Unfortunately, Stirling, as it is currently codenamed, has been delayed.

Ten days ago, we met Lauren, who ended up choosing a PC over a Mac and making headlines all over the Internet. Lauren has now been confined to history. In her place comes Giampaolo, a new guinea pig/actor/stooge willing to put up with hatred from Apple fanboys for the sake of an appearance fee.

Windows 7 is going to be released, well, no-one quite knows when. But I can confidently predict it’ll be within the next 12 months with the next nine months being a distinct possibility. The Beta Builds are already gaining lots of positive review but it seems Microsoft isn’t quite done with tinkering around on its latest OS just yet.

Symantec is warning that confidence tricksters are using the Conficker coverage to cash in. Scammers are selling bogus antivirus software which they imply are genuine Symantec products to deal with the virus.

HP has confirmed it is looking into the idea of using Google’s Android system for its products, likely in netbooks. Such a move would be a major blow to Microsoft, particularly given its claims that Windows 7 works fine on such machines.

Windows Vista has some very forthright critics who have spent the last two years mocking Microsoft for its latest and far-from-greatest operating system. Which is fair enough because Vista has been a major fail in most departments. But do these issues warrant a U.S. state trying to get Windows Vista banned?
