Windows 7 public beta availability extended to February 10

January 24, 2009

Windows 7 public beta availability extended to February 10 Demand for Windows 7 has been overwhelming.  Be it those who enjoy testing operating systems or those who just want to get rid of Vista but don’t want XP.  Microsoft has extended the public availability of the Windows 7 beta until Feb. 10.

That may seem like a long time, but plans for shutting down the beta are already under way.  According to the Windows Team Blog the shutdown will occur in three stages over the next few weeks:

Starting January 27th, the Windows 7 page will be updated with a warning that time is running out on downloading the Windows 7 Beta and that we will be limiting downloads shortly. People will be encouraged to register and start the download of the Windows 7 Beta sooner rather than later.

February 10th, new downloads of the Windows 7 Beta will no longer be available. People who have already started their Windows 7 Beta download and have not yet finished will still be able to finish their download and are encouraged to do so.

February 12th, people will no longer be able to complete their download of the Windows 7 Beta. Anyone who hasn’t finished downloading the Windows 7 Beta will be unable to do so.

So, if you have an incomplete download of the Windows 7 beta and want it make sure to complete it before Feb. 12.

The company says that while the downloads will end product keys will still be available after the cut off date.  It did not elaborate on when those may end.  The dates do not apply to MSDN or TechNet subscribers who will be able to continue to download the beta.
