Windows 7 and Office 14 will launch on different dates
Windows 7 is real and you can use it in beta test. (But do not expect to see the finished product real soon.) The word from Redmond is much later this year even if it could uncharitably be described as ‘Vista Sorted’.
Office 14 is a code name for the Office that will work best with Windows 7. Microsoft launched Vista and Office 2007 at the same time but that will not be the case for the new operating system and the new Office.
Windows 7 will be in full release as early as August or September (but not much before despite earlier forecast) and beta versions have been jamming up servers around the world. If we do not see it by then we will definitely see it before the end of this year.
Office 14, whatever name it will be called at launch, almost certainly will not be with us until next year.
Microsoft released the first Windows 7 beta for public download last weekend and the servers crashed with the demand. It is amazing that Blind Freddy of this Parish could forecast that, but at Redmond Microsoft seems to be unable to grasp quite simple concepts.
Announce the download of a new operating system and a lot of people will grab at it and your servers will be under great strain. Simple.
That happened and the server crashed so downloads were restricted. Now the servers have recovered and restrictions on the download have been lifted.
There has been little publicity about the fact that Windows 7 can be used with a Touch Screen which will die the death because vertical touch screens are almost impossible to use. The illustration at the beginning of this article is of one being used. They are the only screens known that have RSI built in.
It is also odd that amongst all the publicity there is no mention of Office 14 public beta so you can take it as a fair bet that if Windows 7 is coming out later this year then the new Office will not be with us until 2010.
