Tech industry journalists suggesting Internet Explorer users try another browser is about as unusual as the Pope suggesting Catholicism is worth a look. But mainstream media outlets outright suggesting a switch is still noteworthy.

Microsoft has been hoping that Vista would eventually replace XP. This has not happened. Nor is it likely to happen either. Windows 7 is just around the corner and there is no real motivation to migrate to Vista.

Microsoft is now pitching its Windows Live services as a social networking hub. The move has some logistical advantages though may well come across as an outdated attempt for the firm to be all-powerful online.

The larger displays get the more space we have. The more space we have the more it gets filled up. Before you know it, you have two 24-inch displays running and are filling every possible pixel with something.

Online reaction to the beta edition of Vista’s Service Pack 2 has been mixed at best. Testing suggest it does offer some performance improvements, but visible changes to everyday use appear underwhelming.

Last month we noted that Microsoft’s ‘Patch Tuesday’ update was surprisingly quiet with just one critical issue fixed. The phrase ‘calm before the storm’ comes to mind with this month’s update containing fixes for 23 critical bugs, the highest figure since 2003.

Windows Vista SP2 is supposed to be the second third coming of Vista. It is allegedly going to fix everything that is wrong with Vista and Vista SP1. Windows 7 can still be hailed as Vista SP3 though it does add a few more features.

When Microsoft launched its ‘I’m a PC’ campaign in the United Kingdom it chose not to approach British celebrities for endorsements. Given a spectacularly foul-mouthed anti-Vista tirade by actor Stephen Fry, that may have been a smart idea.

Microsoft is warning online auction users to watch out for a bogus marketing scheme used by software pirates. The offenders are offering counterfeit copies of Windows and Office under the ‘Blue Edition’ name.

An Israeli man has battled his way to receiving a refund from Dell after choosing not to use the copy of Vista that came bundled with his laptop. It’s the second such case, but the first that has gone to court.

The final version of Vista SP2 won’t be available until some time next year where April is a likely target date. As a slight surprise Microsoft is releasing a beta of the service pack to anyone willing to test it. Fire up those downloads folks and make sure to be first in line.

The proportion of Internet users running Windows has dropped below 90 percent for the first time. While the dip may be more pronounced thanks to a timing quirk, it’s symbolic of a consistent trend.
