How to relocate your Documents folder in Windows Vista
One of the nice things about Windows Vista is the way that it allows you to directly open your Documents folder without having to know its exact physical location. But what happens if your drive is filling up and you wish to relocate your Documents folder to a different physical location such as a second hard drive? What if you want all your data files in one convenient location for backups? What if you just want to be different?
All you need to do is relocate your Documents folder and tell Vista where it is. Here is how to do it.
By default, your Documents folder is located in:
C:\Users\{username}\Documents where {username} is your Windows Vista username.
In order to relocate your Documents folder, follow these steps:
- Create the folder where you want to move the Documents folder, if it doesn’t already exist.
- Click on Start
- Right-click on Documents
- Click on Properties
- When the Documents Properties dialog box appears, click on the Location tab.
- Click on Move
- From the Destination dialog box, click the hard drive and folder that you will be using as the new location for Documents.
- Click on Select Folder to return to the Documents Properties dialog. The new location will appear in the text box.
- Click on OK. Windows Vista will ask you to confirm the move.
- Click on Yes. Vista will then move the Documents folder and its files to your new destination.
This same technique can be used for other system folders, including Pictures, Music, Videos, Contacts, Downloads, and Favorites. If you decide you want to revert back to the way it was originally, then just follow steps 1- 4 to display the Location tab, and click Restore Default, then click on OK.
