Major Vista update expected before Windows 7

October 17, 2008

Major Vista update expected before Windows 7 It’s looking to be a safe bet, that Vista will get a Service Pack 2 before the release of Windows 7. The timing may be an attempt to overcome the idea that it’s better to skip Vista altogether.

Though it was always in the cards, it’s now certain that there will be a Service Pack 2 (for those not familiar, a Service Pack is a major collection update to a program or system, usually designed to be more efficient than releasing individual fixes and improvements). Microsoft recently added a page on its support site, to be ready for when SP2 comes out.

The firm isn’t publicly commenting on a timeline other than to say there will be more details in “the coming month”. However, ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley says her company sources (which have generally proven reliable) tell her that the goal is to get SP2 out before Windows 7 hits the shelves.

Given that the release may be only a year or so away, it seems pretty soon for a Service Pack 2, even taking into account that Service Pack 1 came just after Vista’s original full release. Depending on how charitably or cynically you view Microsoft, the answer could be either that it has a host of improvements which it wants to share as soon as possible or that it wants to make it abundantly clear that it isn’t abandoning Vista to concentrate on its system.

Microsoft Server 2008 will also be getting a Service Pack 2. That may throw some people, as it hasn’t actually had a Service Pack 1. The explanation is that Server 2008 was developed out of Vista SP1’s code and Microsoft doesn’t want to cause confusion about what ‘Service Pack 1’ actually refers to.

There is a helpful side effect of the planned schedule: with Windows 7’s underlying fundamentals largely the same as Vista, there was a danger cynics might simply dub the new system as ‘Vista SP 2’, a gag that now won’t work as well.

They will just call it Vista Service Pack 3 instead.

I am VERY disappointed with vista. I have 40 computers in my company and 6 of them run vista. Of those 6, 5 have required a complete wipe and start again after they hit the blue screen of death, reboot, physical memory dump cycle. All completely different configurations.

The repair from boot does NOT work, and nor does the System restore. And i was using a Vista SP1 disk in both instances.

So i have given up on Vista for now, any more issues with these computers and i will downgrade them to XP.

Microsoft really did stuff up. XP was to stand for experienced. What happened to that experience? XP SP3 works well. How could they get Vista so wrong?

Unfortunately we need internet explorer for work, but i am trying to move that to firefox. Once we are free there we might test Ubuntu. Mac would be an option if they released a OS version for the PC.

    End ramble. :)
