Vista SP1 adoption rate nears 90%

By Jonathan Schlaffer

Vista SP1 adoption rate nears 90% The adoption rate for Vista SP1 has hit record levels if you are to believe a study done by Devil Mountain software.  It is believed that the problems with the release version of Vista are behind this trend.  On the other hand, Windows XP users see almost no reason to adopt SP3.

Indeed, according to the report nearly 90% of Vista users have adopted SP1.  There could be two reasons behind the high adoption rate.  One is Vista users that were unhappy with the release version and hope SP1 solve most of the problems.  The other is that all new computers come preinstalled with Vista SP1.

According to InformationWeek, Devil Mountain says,

The [high] adoption rate is either due to customer dissatisfaction with the product or because users were convinced of its benefits from all of the media hype surrounding its release.

I stand behind my reasons.  I don’t believe that anyone is convinced of the benefits present in Vista.  In some ways, it is a step backwards.  It even lacks some features that were present in Windows XP Home.

The average user would be hard pressed to find them, though.  I’m hard pressed to even find them.  You can but you really have to look closely.

As for Windows XP SP3, there is less than a 50% adoption rate.  Windows XP SP2 is either that good or no one sees a reason for SP3.  Perhaps some are scared that because SP3 incorporates features of Vista that it will be worse.  I promise it won’t nuke your system or cause it to melt down unless it’s ancient (10+ years old).  And who keeps a 10 year old computer around as a primary system?

That was a rhetorical question, please don’t respond.  (Okay, if you really WANT to).

    1. Roger:

I tried to install SP3 on an XP Pro computer (1 year old) twice a couple of weeks ago, both attempts ended in the BSOD. So I blocked SP3 from the four XP computers I use. I will keep them up to date with other MS updates though.

As for Vista, no thanks, I don’t see any benefit.

Meanwhile, Vista SP1 satisfaction rate nears 9%.
