Ten reasons which prove Vista doesn’t suck
Vista sucks, it doesn’t suck, wait a minute, it does. This is a never ending cycle and we may never come to an agreement. There will always be someone who doesn’t like it and there will always be someone who does.
Whether you like it or not you can make your own decision. Gizmodo has a list of Ten reasons why Vista isn’t that bad.
I’ll sum it up below,
1. It’s more secure than XP.
2. It’s the best looking Windows yet.
3. Games work just about as well as under XP.
4. Vista Media Center is a fantastic DVR.
5. The sleep mode works.
6. Built-in search is better and more useful.
7. User Account Control is useful for some people.
8. Drivers support isn’t as bad as it’s made out to be.
9. It’s not any buggier than Windows XP.
10. Vista is not slow if you have enough RAM.
There is an additional list of five problems with it but I’ll leave it to you to read that. I want to address some of the points.
I’m in complete agreement with point one and two but number three is a problem. It’s a problem because games shouldn’t perform “about as well” they should perform as good or better. In most games under Vista there is a five to ten percent performance hit. It doesn’t make them not playable but if you want absolute maximum frame rates, you’ll have to play them in XP.
Numbers four and five are fine. But number six says the search feature is improved and it is but it’s no Spotlight. Until Windows Search reaches Spotlight levels of intelligence and little overhead, it may as well be the same search from Windows XP.
Number seven will come down to personal preference. I run UAC in quiet mode with TweakUAC, it was just too annoying for me. But the rest are pretty much fine.

1. It’s more secure than XP.
There’d be no reason to upgrade if it isn’t.
2. It’s the best looking Windows yet.
Eye candy doesn’t make or unmake an os, just sales.
3. Games work just about as well as under XP.
Depends on which games you want to play, as usual.
4. Vista Media Center is a fantastic DVR.
Personally, never used it so I can’t complain.
5. The sleep mode works.
Why shouldn’t it? If there’s that option, I expect it to work.
6. Built-in search is better and more useful.
If it works, it works.
7. User Account Control is useful for some people.
Depends on what kind of person you are. Imagine an administrator installing a program on 30 different computers.
8. Drivers support isn’t as bad as it’s made out to be.
Drivers are not made by Microsoft, just tested. I still wonder how they greenlight some of the drivers though.
9. It’s not any buggier than Windows XP.
After 2 years and a service pack, I don’t expect to run into major bugs.
10. Vista is not slow if you have enough RAM.
Which would be how much exactly? An OS should use a minimum amount of resources, not hog them and trash the processes to oblivion.

I’m sorry, but I still think Vista needs a LOT of improvements to even be close to “ok” as an OS.
The search in the start menu is about the only thing I liked about Vista since it came in handy. The rest disappointed me way too much.

I boot both XP SP3 and Vista SP1 on the same machine and recently decided to give Vista a chance by only booting into it and not using XP at all. I did this for about a month and managed to get used to it’s silly little nuances like being continually asked if I was sure and not being able to rename some files or folders (I just didn’t rename them). I even got into the habit of going for a ten mile jog during boot so that I didn’t upset the rest of the household with my cursing and constant use of the terms “I really don’t believe this” and “What’s it doing now” and “Why?”
Media Centre is as big a joke as Vista and I don’t care what anyone says. It’s clumsy, cumbersome and follows a totally different logic (sic) to any other Windows based software. The TV aspect creates a massive delay from any other tv reception device in the household and the reception is jerky and unwatchable. So, to finish, I went back to XP yesterday and it was bliss. Booted up really quickly and worked as smooth as a nut. Using the proprietary software supplied by my TV Card manufacturer reception was perfect and I could rename files (that were in the right place in the file structure without any ridiculous shortcuts, dead ends and totally illogical refusals) to my hearts content without any problems.
I won’t be going back to Vista in the near future or even in the distant future. I just want a machine that does what I want it to do and I certainly won’t be upgrading my hardware because Microsoft tell me to just to finish up with something nearly as good as I already have.

As “4th guy” says, not all the games work so good on Vista. My Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 has crashed dozens of times since I bought my computer half a year ago. Sometimes it’s the videocard driver which says it doesn’t like what the simulator wants to show, and sometimes it’s Vista itself who decides to shut it down showing the typical message “Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 has crashed and it’s being closed”, or not. When I ran it on my old laptop with XP Pro installed, it wasn’t so powerful, but at least it never crashed!

If you like XP, then go to WIN 98!!! I mean, truly, there will be no driver complains and all games will play swiftly, without saying that the boot will be astonishingly fast! C’mon, use your sense people, Vista is great is fast and if you KNOW HOW TO USE IT is a very stable OS. By the way is more secure than XP. Do I need to remind here that XP was as this troublesome with drivers in its beginnings? But people, 6 years have pass, LET IT GO!!! Vista and what is next is the future.
Oh yeah, OS will tend to eat more RAM, because like all software, programmers want to use more resources to get better graphics, better response and better everything. If not, well, then we return to the Caverns with Win 3.1, DOS, etc. So instead of just saying Vista sucks, try harder to find solutions… Funny thing is that if you can’t find a solution then DON’T even try Linux… Is a driver nightmare.

Thats funny, I installed Linux Mint 4 on a Power spec computer after I installed Windows XP. Linux Mint was able to find the audio driver and the network card but XP could not. And if XP could not find the drivers you can bet Vista would have no clue what a driver is….so much for progress.
Anyway back to Vista, one can make Vista “almost as fast” as XP by hacking the spit out of it.
Disable the following
Aero
System Restore
Windows Defender
Norton and Symantec
UAC
Superfetch
Minimize start up to one program or none if you can. Once these hacks are done you can have a bit faster performance and actually may be able to finally use your computer.

Finally!! This guy wrote an unbiased article on this web site. That was probably the best article I’ve seen here on this site in a long time.

Hey, Ive learned alot for Vista. How to decipher BSOD messages from trying to use 3rd party products that Vista does not like.
And how to deal with customer service.
Yeah, Ive learned alot.

Everyone complained at the time that Windows 98 was faster for gaming than Windows XP.

Actually, there is one reason why Vista doesn’t suck: it has caused a great deal of grief to many users, and as a result has driven a good number of them to explore their options. Many have now moved to Linux or Mac. Vista is the best argument for *NIX-based systems; you simply couldn’t buy better advertising if you tried. As for Vista being “the future”, I don’t think anyone believes that – not even the management at Microsoft, to judge by some of the things that they have said (the case of a leaked email that must have proved *most* embarrassing springs to mind).

The 64 bit version of Vista is the only version i have seen perform ok on 4+gb of ram. Saying you need a bigger and better computer to run a new OS is crap. Linux can be cut doesn’t less than 100mb and still be able to watch movies, brows internet, burn CDs, play games, etc. (fully functional computer with networking capability)
Im a Linux user, i laugh at vista, Linux has had security similar to Vista for a while, its called SELinux. Also there is a free program called WINE (Wine IS Not an Emulator btw) that can run more windows programs than vista can. It can run the most windows games very well.

I can actually bet my life that more than half of you haven’t used vista for more than 5 days. You don’t like it you don’t use it. Nobody cares about your opinion anyway so get the fuck over it.
Linux users, yeah, ok… Go learn your favorite distribution’s command for shutdown, don’t comment on OS’s. Linux is just plain silly. The problem with linux is that it’s made entirely by programmers. Uninstalled it when I “discovered” how to install my printer – 6 pages of command-line. Sorry I preffer download – install – print. 2 minutes in Vista.

ah, and another thing. Been using vista ultimate 64 for a year and a half:
No driver issues
No software compatibility issues.
Not slow – I work on an actual COMPUTER, unlike many here.
No problem with games.
No problem with updates, service packs, and things like that. I don’t care. It gets them, installs them, I don’t even know when.

Bottom line – Just an OS.
Conclusion – I’m amazed at how stupid so many people are. When did it become “cool” to hate vista? Did I miss anything?
