Microsoft may continue to sell XP and Vista side by side

June 24, 2008

Microsoft may continue to sell XP and Vista side by side Dell is listening to its customers and will continue to sell Windows XP for a few more days.  To this point Microsoft has said little about the demand for XP.  The company may now have no choice but to continue Windows XP and Vista side by side for a while.

Microsoft’s plan is to kill off Windows XP by June 30.  Windows Vista Business and Ultimate users will have downgrade rights to Windows XP but this is going to cost more.  Dell will be charging $50 for that option.  This is essentially buying two operating systems with the PC (Vista and XP) with only XP installed.  A Vista DVD is still provided with the computer.

The Financial Times spoke with Kevin Johnson, head of the Windows division at Microsoft had the following to say about a possible XP extension,

We’ll announce what we’re doing whenever we’re ready to announce. The number one priority is we want to take great care of our customers. The fact is today that any customer that buys the business version of Vista has downgrade rights to XP anyway. So, XP is available to them. The fact is we’re going to support XP for many, many years to come, we’re going to support Windows Vista for many, many years to come. The priority is taking care of our customers.

You have until June 26 (two days at the time of this post) to purchase a Dell computer with Windows XP.  Perhaps this has gotten Microsoft to pay a little closer attention to what consumers want.  Maybe it has finally learned that it’s impossible to back its customers into a corner in this day and age.

There are many other options.  Microsoft faces losing customers to Apple and Linux and if the slipping market share of IE, it may only be a matter of time before the company digs its own grave.

Then I guess you won’t mind paying a subscription to offset the cost of supporting it forever. XP is a product and not a right. Microsoft is a business. It costs a lot to support an operating system. They are not obligated to offer anything, so sue away. If you don’t want to use the newer OS, use OSX or Linux.

So, Kevin Johnson said “The number one priority is we want to take great care of our customers.” It’s a real shame that this wasn’t Microsoft’s number one priority when they foisted the half-baked DRM-infected piece of rubbish that they call an “operating system” on the world. The truth, as many of us know, is that Microsoft is a supremely arrogant company who couldn’t give a fig for their customers, or for anyone else for that matter. Microsoft is a convicted monopolist – why on earth would you want to give them your hard-earned money in exchange for sub-standard software? It is apparent that many people are asking themselves this question, and that many have, quite understandably, reached the conclusion that enough is enough. Microsoft has long been smug and complacent, secure in its market share and willing to engage in whatever nefarious and illegal tactics have been necessary to maintain its preeminent position. Now the Vista debacle has served as a catalyst, and the worm is starting to turn. All the marketing drivel, all the PR spin, all the twisting of facts, all the gloss, all the Microsoft loyalists in the world – none of it will save Microsoft, which is now reaping what it has sown.
