Dell will offer Windows XP instead of Vista until Thursday

June 23, 2008

Dell will offer Windows XP instead of Vista until Thursday Microsoft is wishing that XP would just die and consumers would embrace Vista.  This has not happened and the company is discontinuing Vista come the end of this month.  Or is it?

The previous cut-off date for Windows XP from most manufacturers is June 30 but Dell has something else in mind.

Instead of the Vista to XP downgrade service, Dell is offering consumers the ability to purchase full OEM Windows XP licenses until June 26 at 5:59AM CT.

After June 26 and until June 30 you will have the option to purchase Windows Vista Business or Ultimate with the XP downgrade option.

That option is available on XPS 630, 720 H2C and M1730 systems.  According to the Dallas News this was done because Windows XP is still a popular option with Dell customers.  Which is the reason for the “extension.”

Of course, the thing that’s rattling around in my mind is what will happen come June 26?  Will there be yet another “extension” for Windows XP or will it finally be done for?

Microsoft wants us all using Vista and it’s going to have to kill off the most popular operating system on the planet to do it.  Which is a shame if you ask me.  Windows XP will still live on in a “zombified” version on the low-end UMPC (ultra mobile PC) market but that’s just not the same.

It may be unfortunate but we’ll all have to get used to Vista.  Those of you that don’t want to have several options.  Buying XP while you still can, skipping Vista and waiting for Windows 7, moving over to a Mac or downloading and installing Ubuntu.

I’m afraid the Ubuntu option isn’t for those of us that like using iTunes with AAC files and iPods are stuck with Windows XP or Vista.  Please, don’t point out some obscure Ubuntu software that will make it work, I’m not interested.

I still maintain that XP was the greatest OS ever made, and among millions of others hate to see it go. But MSFT decided against everyones wishes to retire it and we must move on.

You might want to talk to the real windows fanatics who have been proliferating the Vista forums, the Ubuntu forums and other tech forums. Who have been installing Ubuntu and other Linux Operating systems as a dual boot on their desktops and laptops.

As far as I-Tunes go, there are numerous Linux alternatives to I-Tunes that work with your iPod. And if anyone has not noticed, Amazon.com has started to nip at a I-Tunes heels.

I started the migration over a year ago, not to vista but to Linux. So when XP is no longer available in any legal form, there will really be another option. And with Linux, we have many free options..over 100 of them.

Hate Ubuntu? No problem. There is Linux Mint Five, Open Suse 11, Mandriva, Fedora, Slackware, Freespire. Xubuntu is a lighter version of Ubuntu that will work great on older machines with 256 MB RAM. PC Linux 2008 looks great and has a better desktop than any “Windows” machine I have seen.

Linux will run longer without crashing like Windows does. (Great for server applications). Linux does not have virus, spyware and malware issues like Windows does. Often Linux has better driver support than Vista or even Windows XP.

Plus on the Ubuntu forums there is literally FREE 24 hour support from experienced IT professionals and long time users from all over the world.

In Ubuntu, there is a new release every six months. Compare this to 7 years for Microsoft. with Ubuntu, you get the most up to date applications available. Wine, which is a program that can run Windows programs in Linux was officially released recently and there are other programs like Crossovers and Win4Lin that can also run Windows based programs on Linux.

I am a listening to my IPOD which is connected to my Ubuntu 8.04 PC. I can ALSO purchase songs from iTunes.

Yes that is right. Using Wine or CrossOver, Windows Utility applications written for Linux, You can install a copy of iTunes, Quicktime, Safari on any Linux PC.

Maybe you’ll finally realize like thousands and thousands of others that Linux, especially Ubuntu 8.04, is a viable option to Windows XP.

You may not want to hear it, but Linix *is* now a viable alternative. I hated Vista so much that I decided to try this Linux thingie.

That was about 18 months ago. I’m a computer user, not computer guru or geek, and I use my PC for all sorts of stuff.

I’ve had no problems doing it in Linux at all. Microsoft will only learn sense (if ever) when they see more and more people weakening the Microsoft stranglehold on the PC market.
