Guide: How to get XP over Vista from Dell and other OEMs after Wednesday
By Mike Ferro
As many of you may know, Microsoft has announced plans to stop the sales of XP license to all OEMs such as Dell by the end of the month June 30th. This might cause some of you to panic as it would limit your operating system purchase to Vista only.
Some of you may have had Vista at one time from Dell or another OEM and opted to have it downgraded to XP. As of this Wednesday many OEMs such as Dell have announced they will not allow customers to downgrade on all of their machines.
However for those of you hard pressed against this idea there is a silver lining in the cloud. Dell has announced as of June 18th if you purchase any machines with either Vista Business or Vista Ultimate you will receive a downgrade option to Windows XP.
For Dell currently these operating systems are available on XPS 630, 720 H2C, and M1730 systems. You can bet if these options are popular Dell will have more models with those versions of Vista so customers can have more selections of PCs to purchase and downgrade their OS.
Dell will have a how to guide on each model that is capable of downgrading on that PCs page. However for the time being it looks like Dell is milking XP installed PCs with advertisements enticing customers to purchase a PC because it may be their last chance to get one with XP on it.
If you want to check out the "last chance" XP PCs head on over to Dell’s website.
HP is also pushing XP downgrades with their how to guide. Most of their PCs located in their small business section have the downgrade option such as select wx4000, wx6000, and wx8000 series.
Acer and Gateway also offer several PCs with downgrade options make sure to check their sites before deciding on a purchase.
