Microsoft says upgrade to Vista because Windows 7 is pretty much the same
Yes you read it right, Microsoft is telling people to upgrade to Vista now instead of waiting for Windows 7 because it would help ‘ease’ their way into Windows 7 down the line. What I want to ask is, easier for who the businesses or Microsoft?
Bill Gates and CEO Steve Ballmer had a few things to say about Windows Vista at the Digital D6 conference recently. Ballmer indicated his feelings that Vista was neither a failure nor a mistake, yet Bill Gates responded there were “lessons” they could learn from this experience of releasing Vista. Which indicates his acknowledgement that there were mistakes they could learn from Vista’s launch.
According to The Register, Microsoft has recently attempted to convince businesses to upgrade to Vista ensuring a smoother and easier path to Windows 7, in three or is it one year? Even Microsoft seems confused about their release schedule, as Bill Gates during the conference indicated Windows 7 will no doubt become available next year, however during a Cnet interview with Steven Sinofsky who is in charge of Windows development; he indicates a release in three years time.
This just may be damage control as to a scenario Microsoft wants to avoid, which is complete drop in Vista adoption rate to wait for Windows 7 by the public. The Register received an email from Microsoft stating:
“The goal with Windows 7 is that it will run on the same hardware as Windows Vista and that the applications and devices that work with Windows Vista will also be compatible with Windows 7. So customers will be able to fully leverage their Windows Vista investments in the future when Windows 7 ships.”
So, basically businesses should pay for licensing for Vista and upgrade and when Windows 7 comes out next year, or in three years according to Sinofsky they should purchase upgrade license for all of their systems. I don’t quite think so Microsoft.

Maybe the answer is to abandon MSFT altogether and move to Red Hat and save a ton of money and get off the “upgrade beast” for good.

Redhat is not free. Many versions of linux are free, but in order to get the updates for Red Hat, it is not free. When will people learn, you can’t use only one OS. It’s like saying you can only use one car. Any IT guy worth his weight knows that you have to know all of the flavors, sure you can be better at one, but you can’t be ignorant about the rest.

How about you stop hating on Microsoft. I am so sick of ppl talking trash about MS yet they HAVE WINDOWS PCs… idiots. Vista is great, it’s not Vista’s fault that 1) people try to put it on crappy PCs that don’t have good specs to handle it and 2) they aren’t intelligent enough to learn how to utilize Vista to it’s fullest potential. I run OpenSUSE and Vista on mine until 2 days ago. Now I run Windows 7 Beta 1 7000 and OpenSUSE.
Before posting garbage like this do your research. Your “I don’t think so Microsoft” comment makes you look silly. You know why? Obviously not. Let me tell you… any computer bought after July 1st that has Vista will automatically recieve a FREE (let me repeat this FREE) upgrade to Windows 7. Don’t believe me? Use Google, it’s your friend. So no, they will NOT have to repurchase licensing and all that garbage. Just wait till July to buy Vista if you are still on crappy XP and you will get Windows 7 upgrade free. And btw, it isn’t 2 or 3 years away… Windows 7 releases the end of THIS year.
Is there anything you actually got right in that article? Because I didn’t see anything but false information and another Microsoft hater.

Let’s clear something up with all you MSFT fan boys out there, if it weren’t for the fact that a lot of commercial software is made for only Microsoft, many built computer from retail stores (best buy for example) come with some Microsoft OS, people weren’t so lazy to to give another OS a try, Microsoft would be down the tubes. Vista is junk software that is way to over bloated for it’s own good. Really, how much RAM does it take to do the same job that an OS that only uses 200mbs? Yeah the settings can be turned off but then we basically have XP again and either way, still have all the great security holes for hackers to steal our personal info.
As for Tim, I may or may not be smart enough to utilize all the potential for Vista, but I don’t need to. I will just let all the identity thieving hackers exploit that one for you, and you using a MSFT OS over the internet (especially over the holidays) is like slashing your wrists then jumping into shark infested waters. You are probably one of those lazy, fat, pimply, ITs that love MSFT security because you can do 4 less key strokes to run something. How lazy do you have to be? Have fun staying in denial.

I bought a new Dell and got stuck with Windows Vista. It is incompatible with many other programs and there is difficulty in performing other functions. I had to replace my 2 year old HP all in one printer because Vista was incompatible with the HP program. The strange thing is that the printer worked for a few months, then after a Windows Update, the printer would not work any longer and HP told me that it was incompatible with Vista. Why isn’t there a patch to correct this problem? I am unhappy with my new Dell only because of Vista, and will probably not buy another Dell because of all the newer microsoft program problems they’ve had over the past several years.
First there was Windows Millenium, a bad program, then Windows 2000, more problems. Then Windows XP had several problems and service packs had to be downloaded. Now Vista will go away soon after a short time on the market. What is going on with Microsoft?

Bob,
Dell has nothing to do with Vista and I am absolutely positive that all your hardware is more than compatible with Vista. However that does require knowledge on how to make it work. It sounds to me that you are not an IT person and you really need help from someone that knows. Don’t bash hardware or software if you don’t know what you are talking about.
I have been running Vista since it came out. Sure it was full of bugs until SP1 release and it’s still not 100% perfect. However that would not make me stop using it or making it work. There is hardly any software that’s written for Linux or Unix; until vendors decide to write software that is used on a daily bases for other OS I will continue to be a MS fan.
BTW. To all you IT people, you can thank MS for giving you jobs. In this economy IT is still doing fairly well.

I just upgraded to Windows 7 RC 7100. Wow! This is so much faster than XP SP3, let alone Vista. This is a superb OS and no mistake.
It is easily as good a XP. I consider Vista to be the Windows ME of the 2006 + years. It was a big mistake and should have been put down at birth.
WIndows 7 is a competely different story. Microsoft have learned and what they have delivered is a real killer of an OS.
