Microsoft says upgrade to Vista because Windows 7 is pretty much the same
By Mike Ferro
Yes you read it right, Microsoft is telling people to upgrade to Vista now instead of waiting for Windows 7 because it would help ‘ease’ their way into Windows 7 down the line. What I want to ask is, easier for who the businesses or Microsoft?
Bill Gates and CEO Steve Ballmer had a few things to say about Windows Vista at the Digital D6 conference recently. Ballmer indicated his feelings that Vista was neither a failure nor a mistake, yet Bill Gates responded there were “lessons” they could learn from this experience of releasing Vista. Which indicates his acknowledgement that there were mistakes they could learn from Vista’s launch.
According to The Register, Microsoft has recently attempted to convince businesses to upgrade to Vista ensuring a smoother and easier path to Windows 7, in three or is it one year? Even Microsoft seems confused about their release schedule, as Bill Gates during the conference indicated Windows 7 will no doubt become available next year, however during a Cnet interview with Steven Sinofsky who is in charge of Windows development; he indicates a release in three years time.
This just may be damage control as to a scenario Microsoft wants to avoid, which is complete drop in Vista adoption rate to wait for Windows 7 by the public. The Register received an email from Microsoft stating:
“The goal with Windows 7 is that it will run on the same hardware as Windows Vista and that the applications and devices that work with Windows Vista will also be compatible with Windows 7. So customers will be able to fully leverage their Windows Vista investments in the future when Windows 7 ships.”
So, basically businesses should pay for licensing for Vista and upgrade and when Windows 7 comes out next year, or in three years according to Sinofsky they should purchase upgrade license for all of their systems. I don’t quite think so Microsoft.

Maybe the answer is to abandon MSFT altogether and move to Red Hat and save a ton of money and get off the “upgrade beast” for good.

Vista or Windows 7? Hmmm…. cyanide or hemlock?
