Microsoft badmouths XP to make Vista look good?

May 27, 2008

Microsoft badmouths XP to make Vista look good? Is this a case of sacrificing one offspring over another? It sure seems that way, with Microsoft pointing out XP’s flaws in order to make Vista look light years better. However, some believe these XP “flaws” are actually inaccurate.

With waning Vista sales, and slow adoption rate Microsoft have started doing everything they can in their power. From paying boat loads of money for “hip” advert, to forcing consumers to use Vista with Vista only software, and now de-valuing XP in order to promote Vista.

It’s not surprising considering their sales growth have started going downhill in recent time. Microsoft would of course want to do everything in their power to keep their stocks from dropping in value. According to InfoWorld, Microsoft has been passing around a new white paper detailing what XP lacks and Vista has over XP.

The writer for InfoWorld Randal Kennedy feels the white paper does not do XP justice considering all the third party tools XP had fostered, to address many issues and then some. Randal also believes XP the current king of operating systems, became what it is today due to the many tools available at the user’s fingertip.

Regardless of Microsoft’s intentions, this clearly indicates their growing concern-consumers have no clue as to why one should migrate to Vista from XP. I own Vista myself and over time I find myself pressed to come up with reasons one should choose Vista over XP.

With a clear lack of a solution on how Microsoft can turn Vista into a hit, the only thing they can do is to study carefully what Vista’s weaknesses are and improve upon them for the upcoming Windows 7.

The problem is consumers don’t need to concern themselves over “have no clue as to why one should migrate to Vista from XP”. I’d bet a far higher number of consumers abandon older PC’s rather than upgrade them significantly, so with likely all they can get on a new PC being Vista, they have no choice.
