Microsoft’s Vista lead to a greener planet?
Can you believe it, Windows Vista help the environment? Yes I know, It’s hard to swallow but according to one IT director this is one of the main reasons they are migrating to Windows Vista.
Microsoft Vista does have a green mode which allows the PC to use less power than normal. Which in effect would help us consumers from squandering too much of the magical electricity that comes out of the wall socket. This is a nice feature to have considering it wouldn’t be too shabby on your wallet either with the ever increasing energy cost, every little bit helps.
According to Computer Weekly, the IT director of Tube Lines, with the 2,500 PCs at the company they look forward to saving approximately £40 to £50 or $80 to $100 dollars. When factoring in the life of the PCs they estimate they could potentially save half a million pounds, or a little less than one million dollars.
That is quite a chunk of change they could be saving; this Vista green idea maybe something other companies might consider looking into as well. With computers depreciating faster then ever, saving some cash over the life of the PC might help offset the eventual purchase of new PCs in the future.
There could be some issues maintaining or monitoring all of those PCs to ensure they are running in green mode. Usually users are prone to tampering with settings especially at the office, of course this can be easily remedied with restricting local admin rights.
Maybe I can offset the cost of leaving my PS3 folding@home on with using Vista in green mode.

A resource hog like Vista that uses 83% of ram all the time is a green machine? Who came up with this? Use less computing power, use less ram, need less speed, then use Linux.
Ubuntu Linux at desktop uses only 165 MB Ram. Vista uses four to five times that at least.

This article is shocking inaccurate. Windows Vista requires substantially more Power than XP because of it’s over the top hardware requirements. To run this bloated, heavily DRM’d OS you need mega hardware, which requires mega power. Mr. Adrian Davey should quit his job and learn how to use Power Management. A good article to read is this one: http://www.infotech.com/Samples/Info-Tech-XP_vs._Vista_Consider_the_Power_Savings.pdf
It states that “The results of this study indicate that: » Businesses can save up to $11 per system, per year.
OK, lets do some math: Let’s spend $500 for a new PC and the time and money to deploy it and reap the $11 savings.
Oh, and what are the environmental costs of buying NEW PCs ? Why not pick up a used Windows XP box ?
