Symantec wishes Microsoft would get its act together with Vista

By Mike Ferro

Symantec wishes Microsoft would get its act together with Vista Symantec the software security firm has publicly expressed disappointment over Vista’s lackluster sales this Monday. It’s really not all that surprising because if Microsoft doesn’t make money neither does Symantec.

Symantec is the security giant majority of the companies out there license as their standard security tool. If you walk into any big company chances are you will find some form of Symantec’s software residing on every PC there. So, when Microsoft is not selling Vista, Symantec lose the opportunity to make profit gains.

Symantec most likely have saturated the market at this point with XP and have been looking forward to growth through the introduction of a new operating system.

InformationWeek reported Symantec have expressed that they wish Windows Vista was much more popular. Microsoft had a lot riding on SP 1 for Vista in hopes it would help drive Vista sales. However all indications including Symantec’s statements collaborate with a downward spiral Vista is facing.

Symantec’s chief operating officer Enrique Salem indicated their business clients have expressed concerns that they are not yet comfortable with Vista at this time for them to migrate to that platform. Microsoft reported their software license sales fell 24% last month, which proves Microsoft’s assertion SP 1 would be a sales driver were incorrect.

With the gradual reduction in Vista sales over time, one can’t help start wondering if Vista sales will just disappear all together eventually.

That might be a good part of it. (And I am not defending Vista by any means). But there is another factor, cost. Many, me included, are using other free options and lighter weight programs such as AVG and Avast.

Another reason…some of these anti virus programs are resource hogs and its bad enough that Vista has slow to poor performance to begin with so people are going to alternatives.

We often criticize Vista for being a resource hog, a lot of these anti Virus and anti Spyware programs are no better.
