How to hide desktop icons in 64-bit Vista

May 16, 2008

How to hide desktop icons in 64-bit Vista I’ve talked about Iconoid in the past but it hasn’t yet been ported to work on 64-bit versions of Windows.  There is still a way you can hide the icons on your 64-bit Vista installation.

Iconoid has not been ported by its creators to work on 64-bit Vista but it has been ported by a third party.  Its developers warn you that it may not be stable and provide other cautions before using it but it works.

The regular version of Iconoid, which is for all 32-bit versions of Windows will not function correctly on 64-bit Vista.  It will either not start or will toss up the error "Unable to set hook to desktop."

In the FAQ section a link can be found to a port of Iconoid for Windows Vista 64-bit.  If you don’t feel like digging it out for yourself, here is a direct link.

It works just like the 32-bit version does but has been designed to run in a 64-bit environment.  The developers of Iconoid have not tested this version so it may or may not work for you.  I can say that it worked for me perfectly; you’ve got nothing to lose by trying.

Jonathan is an idiot. I just deleted my icons from my desktop on my own without problems and used rocket dock. no problems here.

What was the point of this news item here?

  2. Jan:

Jonathan can’t delete icons from the desktop. so here this guy when he says something about vista! :D :D :D Jonathan is a joke.

  3. Jonathan:

Then, Jan, I suggest you re-read the article, it’s not about DELETING icons, it’s about HIDING them when your cursor is not on the desktop or you’d rather see your wallpaper than a bunch of messy icons.

You’re a joke for clearly not reading or understanding the article.

  4. Pat:

Thanks Jonathan. I recently switched to Vistax64 and was disappointed to find Iconoid didn’t support x64. All is good now.

@Jan: How does it feel to be the real idiot? At least you being the joke gave me a laugh.
