Google will pass profits of Microsoft Windows in 2009Everything is swell when you’re a monopoly; you have the run of your playground, and plenty of minions to look up to you. In Microsoft’s case, Google is the monopoly running an adjacent playground, and threatening to come over and take control, because Google will be more profitable than Microsoft Windows within one year.

According to the Silicon Alley Insider, Google’s search engine alone will become more profitable than Microsoft Windows by 2009. Though SAI compares them as similar monopolies, there are a few distinctions:

With Vista not doing so well, and Linux and OS X gaining more supporters every day, Microsoft is slipping ever so slightly in its hold of the title of “monopoly.” Granted, Microsoft still has a death grip on the biggest percentage of PC consumers, and Office sales aren’t failing, but Microsoft isn’t dominating like it used to.

For Google, search engine monopolization is fully-realized. Though other engines get traffic, none of them come within sight of Google.

Additionally, Google is able to pick up a much larger constituency than Windows will; how easy is it to type a URL in comparison to load a machine with an operating system? You don’t even need to own a computer to access Google, what with libraries and internet cafes providing those hardware necessities for those who opt out of owning their own machines.

That is largely why Microsoft has been working to get a partner like Yahoo!. With a strong partnership, Microsoft can continue to grow and be competitive with Google, which is growing at a sickening rate.

Keep your eyes fixed on Google, which might be claiming the title of creepy big brother company sooner than any of us would like.
