Vista shows strong growth, sells 140 million licenses

By Jonathan Schlaffer

Vista shows strong growth, sells 140 million licensesNow that people have almost no choice when purchasing a new PC, Vista has show strong growth with Microsoft saying that 140 million Vista licenses have now been sold.  Upgrading to Vista has been maligned but new PC sales have spurred adoption.

General manager of investor relations, Colleen Healy made the statement to the Wallstreet Journal.  According to Computer World, Microsoft had sold 100 million Vista licenses back in January counting the launch since November of 2006.

The 140 million figure did not include licenses used by corporations where the uptake has been slow and the corporate license allows them to use whichever version of Windows the company wants to.  Most businesses that do upgrade will probably get Vista on new computers rather than upgrading outright to it but will probably get the all important site licensing.

Windows XP may yet get a reprieve from its June 30 "end of life" date and Windows 7 may be delivered as early as 2009 so things may not be as rosy on the Vista front as Microsoft would want us to believe; just call me a skeptic.

Sure “sales” might be “up” but its pretty much a captive audience for any new PC sold, so it doesn’t mean any REAL success for Vista. I got it too on my new laptop but I took advantage of Dell’s XP downgrade so while yes I bought Vista I’m no way using it.
