Windows XP SP3 brings it closer to Vista

April 22, 2008

Windows XP SP3 brings it closer to VistaMicrosoft is close to releasing Windows XP SP3 to the masses which brings that operating system closer to Vista by including features that are already native to Vista.  Vista, includes features that are notoroius for slowing down system performance which to date no one has been able to identify with any certainity; let’s hope these aren’t in XP SP3.

Daniweb reports that XP SP3 brings Peer Name Resolution Protocol 2.1 which is the version of Microsoft’s P2P (peer to peer) technology used in Vista to communicate with applications and other Internet connected systems by name.  XP applications will now be able to do the same.

Service Pack 3 delivers Network Access Protection which is, "Microsoft’s system of controlling access to servers based on the health of those servers."  This is built in to Vista and Windows Server 2008.

Addtionally SP3 will include,

"WiFi Protected Access 2, Digital Identity Management Service, Microsoft Management Console 3, MSXML6 and Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.5, needed by Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 (and “snap-in” development framework) and support for Windows Live OneCare security service."

Yes it is true that Microsoft is adding functionality into XP that was previously Vista only, but NOT really the intent of SP3. The plan for SP3 is to provide an easier upgrade to the latest windows update instead of downloading 89+ updates when you install a new copy of XP. The features listed in the article are to make XP not Vista, but to make XP more future compatible. The reality is the XP, just like 98 and 2000, is still an important chunk of OSs on PCs at home and in offices, so it would be wise for Microsoft to still support XP. This is good for XP users as Vista is the new OS and future.
