Vista update decreases USB device compatibility

April 16, 2008

Vista update decreases USB device compatibility Usually the idea of an update is to “fix” something that is “broken.”  It seems Microsoft didn’t get that memo or implement that idea of an update.  Updates at Microsoft, especially for Vista seem to fix the problem it was designed to fix but at the same time cause another problem or two.

An update released that was designed to provide “performance and reliability” enhancements for systems running Windows Vista based and Windows Vista Service Pack 1 based systems.  Those who installed the updates were in for a little surprise.

The update caused several types of USB devices to stop responding; input devices such as keyboards and mice and storage devices like flash drives.  Microsoft suggested removing and reinstalling the devices which did not immediately solve the problem in most cases.

According to PCMag, the company had no choice but to acknowledge the bug existed but provided no further details.  A spokesman for the company was quoted as saying,

“We are aware of concerns that a recent Microsoft update may be causing problems with USB devices and are investigating the matter but at this time do not have any additional information to share.”

Suggested fixes by Microsoft are having mixed results at best.  All the while the company is trying to come up with new and convincing ways of getting people to upgrade to Vista.  There used to be a saying any press is good press but I’m not sure that can be said about Vista.

Vista driver and compatibility issues solved!

Now we don’t have to worry about our printers not working with Vista due to driver and compatibility issues, since the USB to connect the printer up doesn’t work. The fine people of Redmond are geniuses!

This is stupid.. a lot of updates cause problems on every platform. My iMacs (3) died after 10.4.9 update. Did i write an article about it? No.
This website is pathetic how you publish mainly the bad news about Microsoft and only the good news about Apple.

  3. Tom:

Garb, you are correct. This website is completely pathetic.

This guy has no clue, tries to make stories where none exists and offers the most ridiculous analysis.

An update can cause problems – Wow! With only 10 million different USB devices to support there is a problem with a couple of them. Big news story!

Other great commentary from this moron: Microsoft should not blame good people for problems with Vista and should just own up to their mistakes. These people are Microsoft! What is he talking about?

Schlaffer, you should go back to repairing computers and leave commentary to people who have a clue.

Tom and Grab, I think you have both missed the point, especially you Grab. You may have been right if there were only two types/brand of printer/mice/flash drives. But there are hundreds of both. It wasn’t limited to a specific type. ALL mice, ALL flash drives and yes, okay, there were limited reports of other USB input device failures and yes, it is a big deal. Don’t tell me what is or isn’t news.

I suppose you both left the same comments at The Register, PC Mag and Ars Technica, because, obviously, they don’t know what isn’t news either.

Schlaffer, the difference is that those web sites actually post “good” news (and bad, its called “balanced”, or “unbiased”, a concept you’ve never heard of) about vista, while your blog only posts bad news about it. On the other hand you only post good news about apple, while those web sites post the bad news also.

  6. Jonathan Schlaffer:

I’m sure if you go back far enough on this site there used to be good news. I can’t think of anything recent that could be considered “good” news about Vista. It’s not my fault that most of the news about Vista for the past few months has been negative. Could I put a positive spin on it, yes, maybe but it sure would be a stretch and then the other side would complain just as you are.

  7. The Big M:

Somehow I doubt that PCMag are putting in comments like “Usually the idea of an update is to “fix” something that is “broken.” It seems Microsoft didn’t get that memo or implement that idea of an update. ” or “There used to be a saying any press is good press but I’m not sure that can be said about Vista.”

I didn’t even need to see the byline to figure who this was written by.

  8. Computer Support:

Well guys i dont want to create a issue out here from one of my comment but then can’t stop around to say that Vista has made the life’s miserable and with release of SP1 the things are getting worse..

The Author is quite right in stating that there is a problem with Vista for various driver issues..

And even it has been said by Microsoft that just try to install the vista SP1 and then uninstalling it just reinstall it and the problem’s such as sound and other may be get along.. what short of release they have come along.. where more than fixing they seemed as if begging from the end user… :)

I wish someone would identify the update number so I can uninstall it. I am one of those who thinks this IS a big deal as I have my whole previous computer backed up on an auxilliary drive that I now can’t access.

I didn’t see this coming as it used to work fine.

    I HATE Vista!
