Sharp tablet features Vista and Intel Atom processor

By Jonathan Schlaffer

Untitled-5 The Japanese like small things; the smaller, the better.  So, they must already be in love with the Willcom D4 (Sharp manufactured) MID (Mobile Internet Device) tablet “computer.”  I find it difficult to call this thing a computer nor is it just a PDA or simply an Internet access device.  Computer is the best definition that fits it.

Willcom equipped the D4 with a 1.3GHz Intel Atom processor, 1GB of memory, a 40GB hard drive, 2 megapixel camera, bluetooth, WiFi and a LED backlit display with 1024 x 600 resolution.

It even manages to cram in an HD audio codec, mono-speaker and Opera browser on top Japanese PHS (via W-SIM) which is a flat rate data communications plan offered in Japan.

According to Engadget, it is said to run about $1,300 and less if you go with a contract.  Willcom may even offer a version of the D4 with Android for even less come next year.  And yes, it will even make phone calls.  I suppose the only problem with it is Vista but no device is perfect.

It seems the Atom processor is up to the task of running Vista after all, looks like there may be hope for low-cost laptops after all.
