Vista SP1 toolkit aids woes of business-scale installs
Many Vista users are justifiably a bit skittish when talk drifts to service pack 1, recently released by Microsoft; though home installations aren’t particularly difficult (though they could make you a nervous nelly), many larger companies will doubtless spend a good chunk of cash on IT help to ease the transition. Microsoft has an answer for all those businesses who are looking for something a bit more streamlined, and it is a toolkit that should expedite the process quite nicely.
According to InformationWeek, Microsoft is distributing the “Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2008″ to businesses and other organizations that are looking for a bit of help in the upgrade to SP1. Best of all, its available to you for the very very low price of…wait for it…nothing.
The toolkit is just a simple download away from streamlining your upgrade process; Microsoft estimates that businesses can cut per-PC implementation costs from $300 down to a mere $35.
Of course, easier installation doesn’t mean you won’t have to deal with the woeful after effects that have plagued countless early adopters of the service pack. Microsoft is doing what it can to bandage up wounded Vista machines by providing free chat and email services for those experiencing issues; whether or not the toolkit will keep your computers healthy from upgrade sickness has yet to be seen.
Whether you choose to use the toolkit or not, it probably would be best to take a peek at the list of SP1-incompatible drivers listed over on Microsoft’s website, as that is the main problem that seems to be rearing its ugly head in the carnage of the SP1 mass upgrade.
