Vista SP1 compounds existing compatibility issues

By Jonathan Schlaffer

Vista SP1 compounds existing compatibility issues When Vista released it contained many hardware and software compatibility issues, some of which have been solved and some not.  Microsoft made and will soon release Vista SP1 but that too, will be a mixed blessing.

Already some updates required for SP1 have been shown to cause problems.  And now, Vista SP1 is going to add to existing compatibility issues to an already troubled operating system.

My experience with Vista and the final version of the service pack has been rather smooth but that’s not been the case for other users.  When Vista SP1 is released users may find some programs working under Vista without the service pack will cease to function completely or in part.

The company has released a list of programs that have known compatibility issues under Vista SP1.  Some have updates, others do not.  It would be highly advisable to install any and all applicable updates before upgrading to the service pack if you find you will be affected.

Vista SP1 will be a mixed blessing due to the new compatibility issues and because it doesn’t fix everything Microsoft promised.  There are a few speed boosts but not so much that it will be noticed in ever day computing.  Network file transfers and local transfers have been improved slightly but under other circumstances it can be as much as 20% slower than Vista without the service pack.

It’s a mixed bag, for sure.  It’s one step forward but two steps back.  There may be hope for Vista SP2 or even Windows 7.
