Microsoft posts Vista SP1 to automatic updates for 64-bit systems
By Jonathan Schlaffer
Vista SP1 has landed, but not for everyone. Those using a 64-bit installation of Vista may have noticed a surprise courtesy of Windows Update. Microsoft has released the 64-bit version of SP1 ahead of the 32-bit release.
There are still very few users actually making use of a fully 64-bit operating system. If you are, you are likely in the minority of users. When Windows 7 releases in three or four years, the mainstream may finally be ready for standard 64-bit operating systems.
The release of the 64-bit service pack would seem to indicate that it is finalized and most of the serious issues have been resolved. However, an update released that is required for the installation of SP1 was shown to cause issues with 32-bit systems.
Users affected by SP1-related problems have seen their systems get stuck in an endless reboot cycle, Microsoft has not been much help in suggesting a resolution. Repair or reinstallation is always a possibility but reinstalling would cause a loss of all current data stored on the hard drive.
It’s unclear if Vista SP1 for 64-bit systems has similar issues. Currently it seems that Vista Ultimate x64 may be receiving the update but other editions are sure to follow. Vista SP1 is still scheduled for wide release in mid-March, if all goes according to plan from here.
