Free Vista Sunday, defrag with defraggler
By Jonathan Schlaffer
There are several free defrag utilities on the market but this one is relatively new and is made by the same developer which brought the popular “clean up” utiltity, CCleaner to the market also as freeware. It’s important to defrag your hard drive from time to time, why not do it with a free utility.
When your hard drive becomes fragmented, pieces of files are scattered all over the drive and this increases access and load times of your programs. After a while fragmentation can lead to decreased system performance and in the worst cases, system errors of varying degrees.
In order to prevent this, it’s necessary to defrag your files. Defragging them will place the files back in one contiguous location on the hard drive.
Vista has a built-in utility for defragging but it’s about as useful as other Microsoft utilities. Meaning, not so much. Enter, Defraggler. Defraggler is a relatively quick utility for defragging your hard drive though it lacks a scheduler.
The other choice for a quick and fast defrag would be Auslogics, both have a different feature set but the end result is pretty much the same. It never hurts to try both and see which one you like best.

I’ve tried both Auslogics and Defraggler, among other utilities, and was unimpressed. While they are okay for *free* utilities, they are not in the same league as a commercial heavyweight such as Diskeeper, in terms of features as well as performance. For eg: the free ones are unable to defrag the MFT and PF unlike Diskeeper.

Defragging your hard drive is one of those little things that a lot of people – particularly business owners and computer users that don’t have lots of technical expertise and knowledge but DO use computers on a regular basis – forget to do. And it can really make a huge difference in the life of a computer too! It’s always good to have alternative resources (both for those that don’t like to be tied to Microsoft products and those that simply use other types of products) to help keep things running smoothly. Thanks for reminding everyone of this important process and for suggesting this resource!
