Microsoft releases last prerequisite Vista updates in preparation of SP1 release
By Jonathan Schlaffer
The wide release of Vista SP1 draws near being about a month away. Users that installed the pre-release versions of Vista SP1 will be familiar with two updates that had to be installed before the service pack could be downloaded and installed. These same updates will be hitting Windows Update in order to prepare everyone not using a pre-release or final version of the pack, for the update.
Those who are already running a pre-release version of the service pack or the final version do not need to worry about the updates. If you are running a pre-release copy of SP1, you will have to uninstall it before the final version will install. However, the two updates will not be uninstalled with the service pack.
Everyone else, meaning, “average” users will be receiving two final updates before being able to install SP1. Updates KB937287 and KB938371 were released February 12th during the now routine “patch Tuesday.” ComputerWorld says the updates make changes to the Vista installation components and are required to enable installation of SP1.
If you decide to install a standalone version of the service pack, it will include any and all prerequisite updates and install them on an as-needed basis to your system.
