Ballmer confirms Vista SP1 released to manufacturing, available in March
By Jonathan Schlaffer
Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer has confirmed that Vista SP1 has been released to manufacturing. Earlier rumors said that Vista SP1 would be available February 4. That’s not the case, although it has been released to manufacturing, it will not be available until March. Additionally, Windows Server 2008 has been released to manufacturing as well.
It shouldn’t be that difficult for the company to push the Vista SP1 update to the update servers today but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen. DailyTech reports the service pack will not be available until after Windows Server 2008 has been released.
The news has been confirmed by Cnet. Ballmer was mum about specific improvements contained in Service Pack 1 but the beta versions improved boot and shutdown times as well as speeding up the system some. How much of an improvement you see with the final version will depend on the hardware you have as well as which applications you use.
Earlier reports say that Vista SP1 will be released in two waves to accommodate getting the update to users of the most common languages first and everyone else, second.
If you have a beta version of SP1 installed on Vista, it may be advisable to just hang on to it for now. But keep in mind, in order to update the beta version to the subsequent refresh version, the older one had to be uninstalled. I would be surprised if the final version of Vista SP1 wasn’t “smart” enough to handle the uninstallation of the old version and then install itself. Best to err on the side of caution and uninstall the old version.
When Vista SP1 is released, expect more coverage and a review.

If you take some time to read the actual press release then you will see why this is.
