Vista removal service offered by computer shops
It’s not every day you see computer shops offering to remove an operating system. With many users unhappy with Vista, a small town shop proudly advertises it’s “Vista removal service, XP installed.” This could very easily spread to big box retailers as well but unlike small shops, they get a benefit for pushing sales of Vista.
The manager of small town shop, A&D Computers, Aaron Kaplan said he had received many walk-in requests for XP installations over existing Vista installs. Reasons varied, but most of the complaints regarded compatibility issues with older software and hardware. A few complained about the interface and some were just “not happy” with Vista.
Kaplan put up a sign in the shop advertising “We remove Vista, we install XP” and “we repair notebooks.” Of all the signs that have been put up over the years, he said, “we probably got the most response out of that one. A lot of people coming in.”
Since the interview with the Seattle PI, the sign has been replaced with a different message but Kaplan is considering putting it back up due to the positive response from customers.
The service still may not be long for this world because Microsoft will be making access to Windows XP discs difficult after June 30. Individual consumers and small shops may not longer have the option of buying new copies of Windows XP. Though, a “Save XP” campaign is in the works, it has yet to attract the attention of the Redmond software behemoth.
If access to XP becomes difficult, perhaps the message could become “We remove Vista, (Ubuntu) Linux installed.”
