Microsoft tells users not to remove features from Vista

By Jonathan Schlaffer

Microsoft tells users not to remove features from Vista It turns out that most of you are perfectly happy sticking with Windows XP.  Microsoft has created “the operating system that couldn’t” with Windows Vista.  It is considered to be this generations Windows ME.  The company is none too happy that users want to drop back to Windows XP or remove features from Vista.  Though, somewhat grudgingly, it has offered a “XP downgrade program.”

For those that don’t wish to drop back to XP, a utility called vLite has created a stir among some Vista users.  This program enables you to remove features from the Vista installation files or a Vista DVD.  It will then allow you to burn a disc without those features.

That’s just but one feature of the program.  It can also burn installed drivers, programs and hotfixes to the same disc to save you some trouble after your installation.  This is a real time saver for those that like to reinstall the operating system from time to time.

Microsoft isn’t happy about that either.  It doesn’t want you creating installation media that is missing features because that “may affect your ability to download future Windows updates and service packs, and may cause your system to become unstable,” the company said in a statement to Cnet.

There may be some truth to that but surely Windows Update is smart enough to realize that certain features are not present and not install the updates for them?

We’re a year and a few weeks in to the since the wide release of Vista and Microsoft is just realizing it made a mistake.  With all the information about Windows 7 that’s spewing out, it’s almost like the company want us to forget Vista.  Or, maybe it just wants us to know that “relief” is just around the bend.

It had been previously rumored that Windows 7 would be released in late 2009 or early 2010 but it now looks like it will be 2011 before Windows 7 graces us with its presence.  Vista was in development for six years before it released and now we’re looking at another four years for Windows 7.

Great job on cutting those development times, Microsoft.  Let’s just hope that 2011 date doesn’t become 2013.  It’s up to Vista SP1 to save us all now, do I hear Vista SP2, Vista SP2, anyone?

Windows users are officially diagnosed as having Stockholm Syndrome.

Seek alternatives, they are out there and plentiful.
The pain of learning a new skill set is minor compared to a possible 3-4 year silicon hell.

Software is growing rapidly for all the other OS’s. The only thing I do not see growing as fast is video games for them.

For Gamers they are stuck with Windows or Console, until we see more Linux and Mac Games. not saying they don’t already have games, just not like Windows.

I sure can’t wait for linux to become a more used OS. I mainly use Linux for business, Mac for Testing, and Windows for gaming.

I do feel sorry for computer illiterate people though. They have a hard time learning how to double click. Maybe someone will come out with a simple yet advanced and powerful OS, for idiots and smarty pants alike.

      Joshua,

Got to agree with you on the games. All OSes have issues, but I’d rather have less games and more freedom and security.

Just do not use windows, you may try Ubuntu instead. It is very good.

I hate Vista. I heard Vista Ultimate price is $94.00 on website. Here US price is $400.00. What a stupid price to all of us to waste money! US people can face to Microsoft Company and discuss more deeper. That terrible!

Oh you linux lovers are just a bunch of whiners… You can use absolutely zero useful applications on linux. All useful software is made for windows, and a little bit for macs. Linux is dragging along cause of java and its servers uses. But seriously, get over it… Why not waste your time making the linux experience better rather than whining like babies about how no one wants to use your supposedly almighty and all purposeful linux.

Right…so what’s http://www.cedega.com and http://www.winehq.org? The last time I checked, the latest Microsoft Office can be run on linux :)

I’m sorry but do you know what the hell you are talking about? Or did your fingers start typing without researching anything?

Linux has hundreds of applications which in todays I.T. industry are widespread if you do more then just game It is also one hell of a good server OS and desktop. Alot of companies, mine included have moved away from alot of windows & windows server only applications infavour of opensource software. Infuture before you start whining like a bitch yourself think before you post.

I have no problems with Linux, I can watch video, listen to online streaming, listen to my MP3s, do email, instant messaging, open office, and many other normal computer and internet functions. So tell me why I need Windows?

Regarding these “trimming programs” such as V-Lite. Why do they exist in the first place? Um maybe just maybe some Windows operating Systems are just a little bit over bloated thus the need for some trimming down so the OS can operate with a little more performance?

So MS is telling its customers not to use these products. Interesting since Microsoft themselves released a lite version of Windows XP called “Windows FLP” or Windows For Legacy PC’s which is a stripped down version of XP needing only 64 MB RAM and only One gig hard drive space….even MS thought one of their own products was a little bloated…lol

WOW, thats all i can say. If people actually knew how to learn instead of whining like babies, then maybe, just maybe, people will like Windows Vista. Windows Vista is like Windows ME all over again. Windows ME isn’t a bad operating system, its that it had such high hardware requirements that most of the computers running Windows 9x could not run ME. If people went out and purchased new computers with Windows ME on it, it would have worked fine. Its the same here, except its a different operating system, and instead of hardware issues, its learning issues. I figure, its going to change some day, so stop whining like the babies you are, and learn something new for a change.

      appendix to my last post:
Unless, of course, you are retarded in learning. If this is the case then please feel free to use the Commondore 64 that you have been using for the last three and a half centuries because in the computing world, the Commondore 64 might as well have been made three and a half centuries ago.

    12. Ken:

If you think ME was a good Windows release, there is nothing left to say. I’m guessing lead paint in the crib.
