vLite software tool reduces footprint of Vista

January 29, 2008

vSmall Ever since Vista was released to the market many have said that it used too much memory and hard drive space.  Some of you may be familiar with nLite which was used to reduce the footprint of XP.  Now, vLite does the same thing for Vista.  It can be used to remove features and slipstream Vista with installed drivers and hotfixes to (another) disc.

The vLite tool is free to download and can create a customized version of your Vista installation.  Note, you will need the retail DVD or have the installation files stored somewhere on your hard drive.  Restore partitions that may have been provided by the manufacturer cannot be used with vLite.

According to the developer, the main features of vLite are:

  • hotfix, language pack and driver integration
  • component removal
  • unattended setup
  • tweaks
  • split/merge Vista installation CDs
  • create ISO and burn bootable CD/DVD

After selection the actions you wish to take and removing features that you don’t want, vLite will burn a bootable DVD according to the options you selected.

While vLite’s purpose is removing features from Vista, you don’t have to remove anything from it and can use it just to burn a DVD with all your drivers and installed hotfixes (known as slipstreaming) to save time during your next (re)installation.
