Free Vista Sunday, prevent spyware infections with SpywareBlaster
By Jonathan Schlaffer
In order to effectively protect your system from spyware/adware or other malware that isn’t classified as a virus, it’s almost required to run more than one spyware scanner but running too many will bog down your system. Among the ones you should choose is SpywareBlaster.
SpywareBlaster is a simple program that offers no scanning features or removal of spyware but is specifically designed to prevent spyware/adware from installing in the first place. It adds defenses to both Internet Explorer and Firefox to prevent many common infections.
It is a silent program, in that, it will “immunize” your system against threats and will close. However, it is quite effective at this task and should be used in conjunction with one or more active systems like Windows Defender, SpywareDoctor, or both.
SpywareBlaster is available in a paid and free version, the difference being that automatic updating is included with the paid version. Users of the free version will have to occasionally run the manual update and enable the new protections but this is not a hard thing to do.
It is available for either Windows XP or Vista. An offshoot of the program, SpywareGuard, offers active protection against threats. However, given a choice between running SpywareGuard or SpywareDoctor, my choice is SpywareDoctor.
I find that it is best to run between two and three anti-spyware systems at any given time, more than that may bog down your system just a little too much.
