Don’t buy Vista Ultimate for "Ultimate Extras"

By Jonathan Schlaffer

Don't buy Vista Ultimate for Microsoft made a lot of promises before the release of Vista and made a lot of promises right after it released.  Not many of those have come to pass, not even the promise of "Ultimate Extras" which were to be additional add-ons, games and special features for users of Vista Ultimate.

Back in late October of last year, Microsoft delivered on some of its original promises and to date, one Vista Ultimate extra has been released and all the others are in an indefinite holding pattern.

So far all Microsoft has done is promised to ship ultimate extras at some point by saying to Information Week, "We plan to ship a collection of additional Windows Ultimate Extras that we are confident will delight our passionate Windows Vista Ultimate customers."

Here’s the thing, consumers aren’t interested in that it will ship at some point, they are interested in when they will get those extras not "if" or "we’re working on it" because that’s not really an answer.

There are some rather interesting planned Ultimate Extras but Microsoft hasn’t even managed to get to its original intended extras that were to be released.

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Microsoft typically delivers things late and not completely feature complete but here we are going on a year and only one Ultimate Extra has shipped.  If you were planning on buying Vista for the extras, it’s not worth it.

Instead how about buying Vista for the other features like BitLocker Encryption and how it doesn’t force you to pick between Premium and Business features because Ultimate includes both.

With Windows 7, hopefully Microsoft has learned from its past mistakes and produce one single version of the operating system for all users and not require you to take out a small loan to afford it.  Yes, I’m thinking of how Apple sells Mac OSX, $130 for a single license or $199 for five licenses in the same location, how about it Microsoft?

Yes What Jonathan told is right. When will microsoft release it’s promissed Ultimate
Extras to users of Vista Ultimate?

The fact that Apple requires users to buy their overpriced, under spec hardware, in order to use their Mac OS, makes it quite an expensive OS to run. Comparing its upgrade price to Windows is not entirely correct.

Well, a “decent” MacBook costs $1,200 and I’ll grant you that the MacBook Pro is almost too expensive but Apple does have the best tech support in the industry and those that live near Apple stores, just have to drop buy the Genius Bar and their computer will be fixed while they wait or picked up later…

It may not be entirely accurate but you do get what you pay for and the support on the PC side, well, really, I can’t think of a good thing to say about it.

There is also the “time” cost in keeping your OS and security software up to date and the monetary cost of using those security applications…

Macs may be more expensive “out of pocket” but you may break even or save a little over the long run. This is an argument I’ve heard before and I’m not trying to advocate one or the other, there are pros and cons to both methods of thinking.
